Help Cannot update phone

[Android Question]

Guys my phone is stuck on Kernel Version 3.4.0. Android Version 4.3

Basically, when I received the phone, I went through the process of cutting off stuff. Now whenever something tries to update, I get a exclamation point and a triangle saying "an application is preventing this program from updating" or something of that nature.

I need an expert to tell me what i've shut off without factory resetting my phone. Also I want to update to the newest version of android OS, as my girlfriend has the same exact phone and hers is fine.

Posting a model number is a big help...

What device do you have?
What carrier are you on?
What exactly do you mean by, "cutting off stuff"?
What is updating? Apps I would assume?
What version is your g/f on?
Are you rooted? (if so, there are more questions about that)

You will need to restore it to factory state and condition, usually by restoring the original ROM or a nandroid backup if you've made one, otherwise manufacturer Android updates are not usually available for rooted and user modified firmware devices, e.g. "cutting off stuff". Your girlfriend's phone wasn't modified, so manufacturer updates should be OK with that one.
