Root Canoncial Ubuntu for Android Port Possibility

This a call to all EVO V and 3D devs I recently discovered that the GNEX and the Nexus 4 are going to receive Ubuntu For Android on or around February 21st. With that in mind I am proposing a project and a challenging one. If any dev would be interested in porting it to our phone as a ROM. This would be an amazing opportunity and I urge someone to try and see if it can be done. Okay Public Service announcement over haha

Keep calling I doubt anyone will pick up. They will hit the ignore button. It's too big of a project with not enough to gain From all the hard work.

I emailed Ubuntu to see if we're going to have official support but I highly doubt that they are going to give our phone any. But I hope a dev will be willing to do it. Don't be negative haha :)

Honestly I'm not trying to be negative. Just be realistic. This phone is over 2 years old. There are plenty of capable people to do this. But wanting to do it is a whole different story. It's a TON of work with minimal to gain. There is video on you tube of it running on a nexus. It ran like crap. Real choppy. While I'm sure they will have it more stable in the future. But by the time the do. This phone will be a ancient memory.

True but this phone is pretty good for an ancient relic :)

Yes, but too complicated for a native port.

Out best bet would be having someone port it to the HTC Sensation and it should be a pretty easy port to the Evo 3D/V from that device.

I know for a fact that like 4G and certain UI elements would need time to perfect but I think that there's gotta be a way for this to be done. I know Alien Droid was ported from a Nexus so it isn't impossible but I know it will be hard. But think of the outcome? A full desktop in your pocket :D I just want to know how it can be done.

count me in to at least try. i have been starting on development and i already decided i would try and bring it to the evo v and the triumph. the only reason imma do the triumph is because i dont use the phone fro aything so might as well just try stuff til it bricks

Well, we already have that. ;)

Check out this thread and this thread on XDA.

Try the EVO c'mon man don't be selfish haha :D

lol imma try both. my triumph is old but i still work on roms for it just behind the scenes. whenever ubuntu for gnex gets release imma grab it and dissect it too see whats all in it then ill probably 1st try the triumph doe. just too make sure i can atleast get it too boot if that works then on to the evo v i go

I have a decommissioned Triumph too so I'd try it on that too.

ubuntu cant be too hard to port. some other developer i 4got who told me it cant be too hard its built using android drivers so cant be that hard. but we shall see

The EVO V is still a popular phone, from what I can tell - it's being sold by Virgin Mobile as one of their top speced devices, and lots of dev work still actively going on for it...So, I don't think it would be a lot of work for nothing - people would use it for sure. I'd use it - the concept is precisely what I've wanted for a while now, to the point where I'll get a new phone if that's what it takes to have the experience (but I love my evo v so I hope somebody can make it work!!)

You know, I've been planning in building it from source. A port *cough*7-zip*cough* will be very unstable. Not sure when I'll do it, not sure if I'll do it. But I might.

I actually finally got my 1st build made a few minutes ago after weeks of editing and starting over but when I tried flashing it it said this isn't meant to be flashed in recovery smh well I'm tired now time to get some shut eye and try again when the sun rise

Lol well it was suppose to make A flash able zip but I didn't see any zip file. It had a folder called shooter and inside that folder was all the stuff that needed to be flashed I assume. So I tried throwing it in a zip myself but I'm fina try some more work on it

I may take a poke at, but not promising anything. The issue with getting this to work is we already have so many edits to make CM, AOKP, or any other flavor to run on our phone's hardware properly. Hard to say if a lot of the code from CM would work or not. Again no promises but I may take a look. I have been really busy trying to figure out VMM for CM10.1 and some other things. The fact it's not really baked for any other device makes me lean towards waiting till they add more support for devices. Plus Ubuntu is nice but really it's just AOSP tweaked.

I have been trying to get this thing to build a zip file to flash all day. I was hoping I wouldn't have any more problems but oh well. I'm going to keep trying for a little while. But if you try it then best of luck to ya
