Can't access gmail from mail icon

I got my HTC Hero a couple of days ago. Configuration went fine and I really like the phone. But for some reason, when I click on the Mail icon, rather than giving me access to my Gmail inbox, it wants to configure a new Exchang Sync or other pop3/imap account. I configured my gmail account when setting up the phone initially and have gone back to factory settings a couple of times, with no success.

I know that my gmail/gcalendar data are there.
Currently, the only way to access my mail is via notifications (so only when I get new mail). Any suggestions for solving my problem.

Yeah, that's a "traditional" mail reader for POP and IMAP accounts only. Gmail is accessed via a separate app. If you click the arrow (bottom left of home screen), you'll find the Gmail (or Google Mail in the UK) icon in the list.
