Help Can't Connect to PC

meyer_girl

Lurker
I just traded my Nexus 5 for a Galaxy S5 and I am seriously regretting it. I can't get to my files on the phone via the PC at all. I don't get any indication from my phone that the USB connection is there other than the fact it is charging. I do not get USB options in the notifications bar.

I have tried multiple USB 2 and 3 cables. The drivers are installed. I can't get Kies to recognize the phones either in version 2 or 3. Both say they aren't the right versions.

Bluetooth won't connect between PC and phone, either.

I am beyond frustrated as it's been weeks of trying to get this thing to connect to my PC.

Installing Samsung Kies 3 will automatically install the right drivers, as well.

Once you have the drivers installed, you don't have to use Kies after that -- but it has a lot of features that make it useful, including the ability to backup the phone to a directory on your PC.

Not sure the purpose of this comment. As I said, the drivers are installed and it's still not working.

Hi meyer_girl!

Lets see what we are dealing with first of all.

1. Which model of Galaxy S5 do you have? (See #1.2 of 35 Galaxy S5 models - know yours??? to obtain this)

It's SM-G900T

2. Which firmware are you running? (See #1.8 of 35 Galaxy S5 models - know yours??? to obtain this)

Running 4.4.2 (can't update because of this issue because I also get a network/server error when trying to update OTA)

3. What version of Windows are you running on your PC?

Both PCs I've tried it on are running Windows 7.

OK meyer_girl. So, you have the T-Mobile (USA), SM-G900T on the old KitKat firmware, 4.4.2, that will not/cannot update to Lollipop or connect to Kies.

My proposal is that, if you are up for it, I write you a detailed Dummies Guide, (no disrespect intended), on how to update your phone to the stock Samsung/T-Mobile Lollipop firmware for your phone and see if this then solves your connection problems with Kies.

Sounds good to me!

Sounds good to me!

#1.0. The following process is NOT rooting but merely installing the stock T-Mobile Lollipop, Android 5.0, firmware to your phone. It does NOT affect your warranty and does NOT trip the Knox security warranty.

#1.1. Whilst this is a no-wipe flash and your data should be safe, as with any firmware flashing process, I strongly urge you to backup everything. See #2.1 of S5 Lollipop Update Problems - Dummies Guide.

#1.2. This guide is for the Samsung Galaxy S5, SM-G900T, quad core phone for T-Mobile only and no other variant!
(If you are unsure of the model of your phone, go to...
Settings > More > About device > Model number)

#1.3. What hardware do I need?

Galaxy S5, SM-G900T quad core phone

USB lead that came with the phone. Should always be connected directly to PC. Not via a hub, etc:

A Windows PC running, XP, Vista, 7, 8 or 8.1 (N.B. This will not work on Apple Macs)

#1.4. What software do I need?

7-Zip (or similar... WinRAR or WinZip) to extract the .zip files on your PC. Download, here.

Odin3 v3.09. This is the PC programme that will install the T-Mobile, Android 5.0, Lollipop firmware to your phone. Unzip the file and run Odin3 v3.09. Download, here.

Samsung Kies3. This is a PC Suite for the Samsung. Download and install to your PC as you will require the drivers that come bundled with it, to connect your phone to the PC and Odin3. Download for Windows, here.

#1.5. T-Mobile stock firmware for Android 5.0, Lollipop. See below for link...

Model SM-G900T
Model name GALAXY S5
Country USA (T-Mobile)
Version Android 5.0
Changelist 4033351
Build date Sat, 07 Feb 2015 05:18:29 +0000
Product code TMB
PDA G900TUVU1DOB1
CSC G900TTMB1DOB1

#1.6. Download the T-Mobile Lollipop .zip file to your desktop and unzip it. To extract the file, just right click on it and select 7-Zip/WinRAR/Winzip and, "Extract here". This extracted .tar file is the one you will need. This is the .tar file that contains the T-Mobile 5.0 firmware for your phone. To avoid confusion you can now delete the original .zip file that it came with.

#1.7. You should now watch this short video which will take you through the actual firmware flashing process...

How to Flash Stock Firmware for Galaxy S5 [All Variants] by Odin3

#1.8. Put your phone into Download mode by turning it off completely and then press and hold the following buttons... Volume Down + Home (centre hard key) + (lastly) Power. Continue to hold these buttons until your phone boots into the Warning! screen asking you to press volume up if you want to continue or volume down to cancel. Press Volume Up.

#1.9. Right click on Odin3 and select, "Run as Administrator", to open it. Ensure that the Samsung Kies3 programme is NOT running at the same time as this can cause problems

With Odin3 displayed on your PC screen, click on the AP button and navigate to the .tar file, that you placed on your home screen, and select it.

Make sure that Re-Partition is unchecked and that Auto Reboot, F.ResetTime and AP are checked and that the AP box now contains your .tar file.

Connect your phone, still in Download mode, to the PC using the USB lead. If you have successfully connected to Odin3 you should see the ID:COM box in Odin turn light blue.

In Odin click the Start button and you should see a green progress bar above ID:COM and shortly after that the box above it will turn green with the word PASS! in it and your phone will automatically reboot. You will now have the T-Mobile Lollipop firmware on your phone.

#1.10. Should you encounter any problems with re-booting, remove your battery and replace it and boot into Recovery mode and wipe the cache partition as per #1.3 of S5 Lollipop Update Problems - Dummies Guide.

#1.11. If wiping the cache partition in Recovery mode fails to boot your phone, you will need to perform a Factory Data Reset as per #2.3 of S5 Lollipop Update Problems - Dummies Guide.

Extraordinarily helpful post by ironass , however if your USB problem is within your PC you might not connect ( in the last few steps) when you use USB to link your phone to Odin. However, nothing ventured nothing gained. Best of luck

Oh, ye of little faith! ;)
