Help Can't download email attachments

I have not been able to download attachments from email since I updated my OS to Android 4.1.2. It all seemed to work fine before the update. I am using the standard email app to access my Gmail account. It seems to happen with any file type, but the one I'm currently trying to download is a pdf. I have Adobe pdf reader installed. I use AVG free anti-virus and have tried turning it off and that did not seem to help. Since this doesn't appear to be a widespread problem in the forum, I'm sure it's something associated with my particular configuration, but I'm out of ideas.

Here is info about my device:
Model Number == SAMSUNG-SGH-I727
Android Version == 4.1.2
Baseband Version == I727UCMC1
Kernel Version == 3.0.31-844945

Thanks for any suggestions, it's kinda painful to have no access to attachments.

Maybe the attachments are downloaded already.
Have a look at the folder Download at your phone's internal/external SD card.

I spent a little more time trying to debug this problem and have at least found a method that works. The email icon that I was using was simple labeled "email". Being rather naive about some of this since I switched from iPhone, I assume that is an app that came preloaded - I don't actually remember. Anyway, I tried the app labeled "gmail" since I am using my gmail account for the email on my phone. That app seems to download the attachments just fine (I've only tried pdf files so far, but my guess is I'm good to go).
