Help Can't find received text messages

[Android Question]

I receive sms text messages using Android Marshmallow on a Nexus 6. Later when I want to see them again, often I cannot find them. Even just a few minutes later, I can't get back to them. Where is a list of each sms text message in the order received? I have been using Hangouts for sms but wondering if I should go back to Messenger. Also, how can I insure that a sound alert occurs when I receive an sms text?

I don't use either of those apps, I much prefer Textra...
And at least with Textra, the most recently received message is at the top of the list, and all the others are sorted by data/time received.

Nearly all msg apps will allow you to set a defined alarm tone to Notify that a new msg arrived.
