Help Can't get emails to send

Just got my GS3 this past weekend and I have set up my personal email and my work email accounts. My personal email is through Gmail so there is no issues there. My work email, however, is a POP3 account. I went through the Email Account Setup and plugged in all of the information. The phone receives emails just fine, but they will not send for me. They just sit in the outbox and when I click send, I get a notification that says "Connection Error (Acct Name)". I really need to be able to send emails with my phone and would greatly appreciate any help I can get on this.

One suggestion, since I don't know any details about your POP3 account, is that you could try something I use when setting up a new device. Presuming you also use the same email account on a PC, open the account on the PC and copy the information and settings you have there over to the new device.

Very likely it is a setting that needs correction which is keeping you from sending. It could very well be the settings for the SMTP server. If you make sure they are the same as the working account used on an installation elsewhere, it should work for you. If you let the account set up automatically, instead of manually, it probably didn't use the correct mail server settings and just grabbed the first server that looked 'close' to what you needed. I've seen that happen on my accounts if I allow automatic setup.

Exactly what I had to do as well.

So I got a response over on XDA that said to try switching the ports on the outgoing. I switched the port from 587 to 110 and tried resending the the email and it sent with no problems. Thanks!

You're welcome. Always glad when solutions are simple. :-)

Well it appears the solution wasn't so simple.

I have a new problem. Changing the port allows me to send emails, but only when I connect to WiFi. I still cannot send emails over 3G. Any ideas?

Try verifying your SMTP server settings on the S3 with those on a device you have which does send email correctly. Make sure you methodically check every possible setting so you don't miss something. A single setting being different can stop the mail from sending. Also a single character syntax error will too (trust me, I know :-)

I don't have another mobile device that has this email account setup, only my work PC. I have already compared both and they match.

Try using gmail account as your SMTP server some ISP will only send emails when connected on your home net work

If your work PC is not on your home network, then grmuge's suggestion may be pointing to the problem. I've seen where trying to set up my ISP email account while visiting another state would not work because I was in a different location. The server used by your work PC may not work outside the network it is on.

I'm hoping this could help so I'm throwing it out there anyway.

Back when I had my galaxy portal, the alternative email app totally hated setting up an account over 3G. No matter if the server was right, or what port numbers or authentication was set, it just wouldn't do it (for Hotmail using stmp.live.com) it always had to initially be set up over wifi (any wifi would do), but once set up, I could send and receive over 3G as normal. Just wondering if something in there might be relevant.

Okay, so I tried this. I left my incoming server settings the same (my work POP3 account), then I changed the outgoing server settings to:

smtp.gmail.com
Port 465
SSL Encryption

Then I turned on "Require Sign-In"
Put in my Gmail Username and Password.

I tried to send a test email from my POP3 email to my Gmail. It sent just fine over 3G, BUT instead of going to my Gmail Address, it goes to my POP3 Address. So even though I am telling it to go to my @gmail.com email address, it's going to my @POP3.com email address. That's really weird. I wish I could just fix it already lol.

OK, I googled mail server settings for ipower and found this. If you haven't seen it yet hopefully it will help.

User Guide - Setting Up Your Email

Looks like they have the server settings in the second link from the bottom on that page. :)

Okay I set it up as per what the iPower site told me to and it appears to be working. I'll have to keep my fingers crossed though. Thanks for all your help Zoandroid!

Sorry to bring this up from the dead but I thought it better than to start a new thread since I'm having essentially the same issue. I have this problem with 2 out of 3 Samsung devices, my S3 and my Tab2 10.1. On my S2 it doesn't have this problem at all. I've followed the advice in this thread and my S3 and Tab2 still display the issues but sporadically. Sometimes they will send emails and sometimes they won't. I've just rechecked my setting against my PC and it's all the same so I don't know where the problem is.

In case it makes a difference, my email server for work is located in Mainland China but my S3 phone carrier is based in Hong Kong, my Tab2 is Wifi only and even then I still have this issue with both devices using Wifi only. Thanks for any information.
