Can't get rid of voicemail icon

Awhile back I set up my voicemail to go through google voice. I don't really remember the steps I took do do it. It was confusing at the time. I didn't have the app and just got my voicemails as attachments in my email. That was all on my OG Droid. Now that I have upgraded to a verizon galaxy nexus I started getting normal voicemail notifications through verizon. If I try to click the the notification it calls my phone, but gives the message as if someone else called me and I didn't answer the phone. So I can't get into my voice mail and thus can't delete the message so there is a voice mail icon perpetually in my notification bar. It's driving me crazy.

got the same problem, permanenty have a "1" on the phone icon, deleted all call logs and rebooted S3 and the damm thing's still there

I called verizon and had them deactivate my voicemail. I then went into the settings for the phone app and cleared everything, forced stop, etc. Then I rebooted. It's all good now.
