Root can't install roms on droid x

Hey, I'm helping my friend install a new rom on his Droid X because the GB update messed his phone up. The Recovery version is 2.xxxx. I have Team Liquid's rom which won't install and it says

"E: failed to verify whole-file signature"
"E: signature verification failed"
"Installation aborted."

I thought maybe the download was bad so I downloaded OMGB and the same thing happens.

I can install roms without a problem on my Thunderbolt but I know nothing about this phone. It took me a bit just to figure out how to get into Recovery. No longer can I get into Recovery with Rom Manager or Quick Boot. If I tried to use those apps it just ends up rebooting the phone.

Any ideas why this is happening? Should I install the latest version of Recovery (CWM)? I downgraded the Recovery because I thought the new version was preventing Rom Manager and Quick Boot from booting into Recovery mode. Thanks in advance!!

Edit: I downloaded the Droid 2 Bootstrap app and now I managed to get into Recovery but installation failed again. It says

"Installing update..."
"assert failed: run_program("/tmp/check_kernel")"
"==0"
"E: Error in /sdcard/update.zip"
"(Status 7)"
"Installation aborted."

Any ideas?

Update.zip has to be a signed version by Motorola to work. It sounds like you need to use the "Choose zip file from SD card" option instead of the "Update.zip" option.

Thanks! I will try it by choosing the zip file from the SD card. The only thing is the phone won't boot up now. Any suggestions on getting the phone to turn back on?

What do you mean when you say I'm installing it on top of the wrong software version? Thanks!

Rom installation guides usually specify what versions of software need to be on your device before flashing their rom over it. I believe they were saying you didn't start out with an appropriate rom before trying to flash over it.

Unfortunately, Moto phones are a different kind of beast from the HTC TB you are used to working with.

Though a bit outdated now, you might want to stop and read the link in here:

Specifically, you might be looking at having to install RSD Lite and flashing an SBF file to your friend's X to recover it. Realize though that once a phone is flashed with an sbf file, you will definitely lose root and have to root it again, also any alternate recovery (Clockwork Mod) will be lost as well. An sbf flash will take the device to bone stock "out of the box" condition.

One final note. Hopefully, the battery didn't die, because if it did, it is almost impossible to recharge it because the battery doesn't charge in the X unless it has a working rom on it. If the battery had a good charge on it before you started to mess with the X, then I would caution you to keep your flashing attempts to a minimum to conserve on what's left in the battery, because once you lose too much charge, it's game over unless you find a way to recharge the battery.

I fully charged the battery before messing with it. Thanks for the link. I am going to try and use that to put his phone to out of box condition. I really, really appreciate it!!
