Can't kill apps, they keep coming back

Hi, I recently went from a HCT Hero to HTC Evo Desire 4G. Phone is pretty cool so far.

However when turning on the network capabilities, a bunch of apps come on. I used the Advanced Task Killer to kill the apps that I don't want up and running, however they keep coming back on. I kill them again and they come back again.

Is there anything I can do to stop them from coming back on, unless I really do need them?

I also want to root this phone so I can get rid of all the Sprint apps that I'll never use. I'm trying to read up on rooting the home here.

It amazes me how persistent the taskiller myth is. Once I learned to stop using it - everything about my phone (Hero at the time), got better. And the android experience in general got better.

The only time you would need a taskiller is if an app hangs or needs to be force closed. And even then, you can do that from within Android's settings.

The problem is that in-store reps keep recommending it to customers as a cure-all for phones with problems. At one point reps were even instructed to advise new customers to install a task killer as a necessary part of the OS. Now I think they do it simply to cut down on support time, similar to the old "take two aspirins and call me in the morning."
