Can't put new items on screen

[Android Question]

I have a lock of blank space on my home screen. I used to have a weather widget there but it stopped working so I removed it. The problem is that they tablet seems to think items are still there and although there is empty space I cannot move new icons or widgets into that space. Is there anyway to free up that space? I have an Asus transformer.
