Help cant put S5 in car mode and run Waze app

Whenever I get in my car I turn on my BT to connect to my stereo and I put phone in car mode. For navigation I like to use the Waze app but the only way to use Waze is to back key out of the car mode app and start the waze app. Then the phone is no longer in car mode. When it is in car mode I am unable to drag the notification bar down and the home key doesnt work either, only the back key works. SO my choices are A) have hands free car mode going so if I get a text or something I dont have to touch the phone, no Waze app or B) Waze app and no car mode/hands free.

Ideally I would like to have the phone running car mode in the background so I can receive/respond to spoken texts and have the waze app running in the foreground.
any ideas?

I have used the Waze app and enjoyed it a lot, what I did not like about it was the high CPU use, eating up a LOT of DATA redrawing all of those maps, and it was making my Galaxy S5 run pretty darned hot.

So, I looked for an alternative and found it in CoPilot USA Premium.
* CoPilot GPS - Free version - Android Apps on Google Play
It offers turn by turn with pop up pictures of intersections on the freeways, and the Very Best Feature is that it loads the entire USA onto the extSD card.

that means no more DATA use, runs cool and NO overage charges on my data plan.
It also means extremely fast mapping operations because all of the map info is on the extSDcard.

But, if you want the Social Aspect of Waze..... this won't help you.
But, the reason I mention it is this app might well work in your situation.

I only use Waze in town on very short trips, never on freeway drives that take all day long. I do NOT like the way Waze keeps revolving the map around, I loose which way is Left/Right or East/West actually.

I like the waze app specifically for the warnings of cops, construction, traffic, and hazards
does the app you mentioned do those things?

No, CoPilot does NOT have any Social features at all.

I fully understand your desires on this, my son is on the road a lot in his consultant job. He has a company paid iPhone and don't care about data charges of $300+/month. He tells me he can't afford to not use Waze because it has saved him a lot of time around bad accidents. He told me he learned to pay attention to it because when he ignored the bad accident warning twice, it cost him hours of sitting still in Interstates where you can't turn around.

Is it necessary to use Car Mode? By this, I am assuming you are letting the Bluetooth log into your car's BT system?

My cars don't have those features.
