Anyone else have the same issue I did tonight trying to read my Gmail on Firefox or Opera? I have used Gmail on either of those browsers for years. Suddenly tonight EVERY ONE of my emails in every folder appears as a horizontal bar, no text, with an advertisement below it.

I did some Googling and found that this same type of thing happened back in June 2010, when 'certain browsers' (not IE) suddenly became 'incompatible' with Gmail. They fixed it on July 1 2010. Well, it seems they're at it again, likely a side effect of the rollout of their 'new look' they are eventually going to foist on us. The only way I could make the emails readable, short of using IE  is to open the Gmail site with 'basic HTML'. But since the option to do that, at the bottom of the page, is HIDDEN now in Opera and FF, that is a bit tricky to accomplish. However, I learned that Gmail uses a totally different URL for the basic HTML view. If you need it, here it is:

Looks like you may be right. Whatever is happening, Opera 'fixed itself' overnight and now allows me to view the standard gmail view just fine. Firefox 7.0 is still showing the line with no text. I cleared all its cache and cookies and history and restarted it but still it cannot display standard Gmail view.

In my FF addons it has disabled Javas Console 6.0.26 because it is "incompatible" with FF7.

Their insane rapid release program sucks! This is a perfect example of why. Extension developers could barely keep up BEFORE they started with their stupid rapid release. Now they will never keep up.

What can I do if it is a java issue? (Aside from avoid FF, which I am inclined to do anyway. If Opera had DownThemAll I would completely abandon FF for good).

I just re-installed Firefox 5.0 and adjusted the advanced settings so it will NOT update. But even still, I have to use the Basic HTML view to read Gmail. Whatever they did, even version 5 of FF is 'incompatible' it seems.

I'm open to any suggestions to try and fix this if you folks have any ideas. At least I have Opera working again (which I use most of the time anyway).

No problems here, and I just tried Firefox and Rekonq. (Rekonq is similar to Chrome.)

Never heard of Rekonq. The only reason I don't use chrome is because of Google's hard-headed decision it 'doesn't need a master password'. Does Rekonq use a master password to protect stored passwords?

Looks like I'll need to completely remove all traces of FF and start over with a fresh installation. Although I prefer to keep different versions of FF installed in their own folder, installing the fresh copy of version 5 last night, with updates disabled, still found and used all the settings from newer installed versions. So whatever is causing the problem is re-infecting any new installation.

I was all confused, because this is in the Android lounge. I was thinking "Why don't you just use the Gmail app?" Because all of these browsers exist on Android, too.

Sorry for the confusion. I posted here in the lounge because the issue isn't with my smartphones. I figured since we do use Gmail on our phones, most of us would also be viewing Gmail on our PC browsers too. :)

And FF is one of the most popular browsers right now (although that may change if they don't get their head on straight with this rapid release of half-baked versions crap). So I was hoping lots of us use it, and I would get the quick replies that I got.

Apparently the issue is just on my PC and notebook. Before I got aggressive and un-installed FF, I decided to try creating a new user profile. I've had them suddenly get ' corrupt ' in the past. Once I created a new profile, I was able to open and read Gmails in standard view once again. So I guess user profiles on both computers somehow suddenly became corrupt simultaneously? Or a more likely scenario would be that Gmail did something which was incompatible with the current settings of both profiles, as I keep them both working in similar fashion.

Thanks for the replies folks. :)
