I got this G1 working, put my SIM card and proceeded to the "register me with your gmail account screen." I enter username and password. Phone seems to think I not only have 4 bars but also 3G here (if you want I can show what I mean... just to make sure I am not imagining things). But, nothing happens. Well, it says there is a problem and I should try again. I submit the account info again and nothing. Since I had successfully used that same SIM and gmail account with a mytouch3g, I wondered if I can only register one phone or something like that. So I tell it to create a new account. And get the same screen saying it cannot connect to the server and I should check my SIM card. What should I try next?

I don't think you can register just one phone (I have registered my phone and Android emulator with the same account). What do you mean with "having 3G"? Is it just 3G network (which is normally used to make calls), or have 3G internet (right APN). I think you just need to change APN settings in your phone (it's under Settings/Wireless & Networks/Mobile networks/Access point names) according to your operator, it should be accessible also from activation screen.
