Help Can't reset MXV to factory specs

This box has been buggy for the couple of weeks I've had it, but now I've lost sound and from what I can see, that's a developing known issue. What bugs me more is that it doesn't perform a factory reset. I tried both going through the menu AND the reset button at the back of the box - no dice.

I made sure that all the options were turned OFF for backing up my data. I have another M box that's actually cheaper and works great. I can send this little beast back to Amazon but would prefer to fix it if possible.

I also have a Roku connected to the same TV - there's sound on the TV, and interestingly enough there are button sounds on my M box, just not on any of its apps. I checked Kodi, Netflix and YouTube - none of them have sound.

Here's what else I've done:
1. Cleared cache (don't think it's clearing - another bug with this box)
2. Toggled between HDMI auto-detect both ON and OFF, in the display menu
3. Toggled with the Digital audio auto-detection ON and OFF, and toggled between the digital audio output options
4. Uninstalled and reinstalled the apps
5. Re-seated the HDMI cable
6. Sworn at it and given it the evil eye. (Yes, I know it's not official tech, but it was either that or beat it into submission, which would void my warranty.)

If you have sworn at it and given it the evil eye and it still isn't responding you may just have a stubborn mule inside there flipping you the bird!
You can't expect a man to do more than give his misbehaving devices the evil eye when they don't co-operate!

It's tempting to do everything you can to fix the device yourself but I've found that pretty much all makes and versions of the wave of Chinese Android TV boxes are gonna give users problems eventually.

Send it back before that donkey learns to kick you when you're asleep!

Eh, fair enough. I guess I'll have to break down and get a Chromecast. I'd do the Firestick but now that it's all ads all the time - no thanks. Sooner or later I'll get a real 'droid and name it Three-PO.

Thanks for your input!

By the way, I'm a tech myself, just newish to the Android TV boxes. For the record my Android phone (an LG) is also a pain in the butt. I don't blame Android for that - again, its a creator thing.

Yep, same here.

In fact, I permanently bricked the first one I had within a few hours by changing (or attempting to) the runtimes from Dalvik to ARM so I could run the Chromecast receiver software.

That was a big mistake! :)

Sometimes you need to use the correct tools on the things.

I didn't manage to brick mine that quickly. My big mistake was uninstalling and re-installing Kodi after it froze in update Hell. I got the uninstall/reinstall done but that's when I realized it wasn't going to do a factory reset. I also knew that since it wouldn't do a factory reset it would probably be full-on crash and burn shortly, and it didn't disappoint. On the other hand, it's a cheapo Chinese Android box, and I literally bought it for the learning experience.

I guess if nothing else it was a valuable tool for learning not to buy cheap Chinese Android boxes, right?
