Help Can't resize any icons on my new XperiaZ

So... I'm fairly new to the Android scene, I just made the switch from apple and I'm loving the new phone so far.

Now almost right after I got it, I was able to just select an icon (widget, the clock, or any icons) and change it's size to design my background how I wanted it. It's one of the first thing that I did... now I don't remember doing anything specific, the phone is not even a week old and I can't figure out how the hell i've been doing this.

When I hold my finger on an icon, all I see is the icon going green and enabling me to move it around, no "scalable bars" appear on the sides anymore.

Was it an automatic update that did this ? Have I done something without even noticing it ? I've seen some people claim that a new launcher could do the trick but i'm not sure this is what I want...

Thanks in advance !

I don't remember icons ever being resizeable; they certainly aren't with JB 4.2.2. Some widgets are and some aren't; the Google Search Bar is, as is the Calendar widget, but the Weather and Music Unlimited widgets aren't.

My default choice of Launcher is Nova Prime, partly for the ability to resize any widget to suit my needs. It has loads of other added-value features too, such as homescreen folders, scrollable dock, gesture control and the facility to use themes/icon packs.

Third-party launchers are really no more problematic than any other app. It's very easy to install a few and play around to see if you like them, and just as easy to switch back to Xperia Home if you don't.
