Root Can't root because "Bootlocker unlock allowed: No"

4.3 ..... I can live without rooting but would like to change the /etc/hosts file permissions (chmod 777) - for obvious reasons. This seems impossible without root - or is it ?

I have SDK on my PC (W7) - I also have Linux Mint O/S available but am a guru with neither. Anybody know how I can chmod this teeny weeny file ?

I'm aware that root is needed but is there any get-around ? e.g. can ADB or any utility be used to change the setting of Rooting Status from "Bootlocker unlock allowed: No" to Yes. If this were possible the rest is easy. If not can anything in SDK be used to chmod 777 the hosts file ?

Root is needed for that as far as I'm aware.

Are you using a Sony device per chance? I'm Bootloader Unlock allowed: No and I'm still rooted (I'm even running a custom ROM).

What device are you using?

Yes EP, I have a Sony Xperia, but I was assuming that tweeking from "Bootlocker unlock allowed: No" to Yes would NOT be hardware specific. I had a rooted Xperia M - updated from 4.1.2 to 4.3 and now find it impossible to root because of the bootloader problem. I'm thinking some guru out there knows how to change this little bit from 0 to 1 ? If there's an SDK expert - can it be done ..... and if so might changing this switch cause more harm than good ?

As I said, it's not too important for me to root - I just need to be able to update /etc/hosts

Also, is it expected that a future release of Framaroot will allow users to root even with "Bootlocker unlock allowed: No" ?

Thanks again EP ...... no I haven't used Flashtool - I suppose I could downgrade, but that seems a lot of effort (with possible "oops" occurring !). It seems crazy that I have to downgrade to be able to root.

This is text of a mail I just sent to Sony Xperia Care

===========================================================
I recently bought an Xperia M. I wished to remain with my mobile carrier so I paid quite a lot of money to have the SIM unlocked.

I rooted it myself - this was MY phone and MY decision. OK the warranty might have been voided but so what - there is nothing to apologise for.

I was able to edit the /etc/hosts file to stop the bombardment of idiotic garbage that advertising is.

Everything was hunky-dory - that means OK if you're not very fluent in English. I repeat - everything was fine until I got an update from Sony - Android 4.1.2 to 4.3. I ran the update via PC Companion.

It was this update (Sony's - not anybody else's) that messed up things - I cannot root the phone again because Sony's update changed the Rooting Status to "Bootloader unlock allowed: No".

I want to know will Sony undertake to release an update to change this option from "No" to "Yes" ?

Bootlocker unlock allowed: No" to Yes.

What's the boot loader to do with gaining root? AND if you don't understand script and command based functions stay out of Linux.

Try using safe root. Or towel root. Let me know. And yes. You can change it to yes. Es file explorer. But you need root to find it.

I'm not understanding why you think root has anything to do with boot loaders. It doesn't. As far as updates after you root. Never accept them. Get a ported one from custom Roms. Boom. -.-

Oh BTW. When you told Sony you rooted ( took over your phone and screw them. Lol) you not only voided warranty. They pretty much voided you. No support. No nothing. I'd feel blessed if they reply.

Thanks AnOn for the tip.
I had tried (with no success) all sorts - Framaroot / Kingo etc to root the phone.
For some reason I was lead to believe that rooting was impossible while Bootloader unlock allowed = NO.

I had a look at your suggestions - saferoot / towelroot, and googled a bit.
I decided to try Towelroot.
I already had Busybox/SuperSu on the phone from a previous incarnation, until Sony messed things up with their 4.3 upgrade.

Running TowelRoot was simple - no PC required - just download and installed the .apk from www.towelroot.com
My virus s/w (Avast) went bananas *** MALWARE detected - TROJAN reported etc. and tried to stop me many times but I decided based on what I had read to take a chance.
Result - phone rooted YIPPEE

The only reason I need a rooted phone it is to change the /etc/hosts file so that I don't have to look at moronic garbage that imbeciles in the advertising industry try to bombard us all with.

DISCLAIMER - I took a chance ignoring all the warning messages my virus/malware detector screamed about. As far as I can tell all is well but I can't guarantee that the software produced by George (Hotz tough) is AOK. If anyone runs into problems with TowelRoot as a result of my favourable experience - I cannot accept responsibility !!!

Towel root is fine. I've looked through its code and seen nothing out of place. Its going to set off any good a v. Its an "exploit" that's how you gain root. And thanks brother. Your welcome. Now enjoy what android can truly do and have fun.

Hello!

Ok, if there is a way to set the "bootloader unlock allowed: No" to "Yes",
how is the plan?, the process?

1. root, to become system-acces? - ist this possible before unlock?
2. with Es file Explorer or something, find the "system-file"? in them
"bootloader unlock allowed: No" stands?
3. replace this system-file with an other one?

Or is ist possible, to flash/replace the whole bootloader, to set the
bootloader unlock allowed to YES??

I think there must be a way, to remove/replace the whole software on a "sim-locked" phone or a "bootloader unlock allowed: No" phone!!

Please help - its now time to find some reason

regards,
Stefan

Cool! I used TowelRoot on my Sony Xperia M (C1904) running Android 3.4 ... Bootloader Unlock Allowed = NO

TowelRoot worked for me! So awesome! All I have wanted to do is put a custom Rom on my phone and so far this is the only thing that has been able to root my phone. WOOHOO thanks for the tip dude! :D

Cheers!:D
