Help Cant save to sd card

I create or edit a word document for example and it will not save to sd card. It's a permission thing it looks like but how do you change permissions on the sd card?

Pretty sure you'll need to be rooted, but that fixes it. I did the manual method, but I'm sure the update.zip works too.

I use ES explorer. What shows up as SDCard on the tablet is actually the internal memory. However the folder "extstorage" appears to be mapped to the actual card. So if you save to that folder you should be able to save to the sd card itself. Typical clunky android. I am not rooted.
