Root Can't seem to root my phone!

themoog75

Newbie
Hello! I am new to the forum, and after browsing it I have found loads of info about my android, but I still have a problem! First, some info about the phone -

Samsung Galaxy Ace

Model Number - GT-S5830i
Android Version - 2.3.6
Baseband Version - S5830iXXLD2
Kernel Version - 2.6.35.7 dpi@DELL134#1
Build Number - GINGERBREAD.XXLD3

I am trying to root it, and have downloaded kies and the zip file as per the instructions, but when I go into recovery mode and click on 'apply update from sdcard' I get the following -

-- Appling Multi-CSC --
E:failed to mount /sdcard (no such file or directory)
E:Can't mount /sdcard

Install from sdcard complete.

PLEASE help! What am I doing wrong? Is it an sdcard problem? It's becoming quite frustrating now.

Many thanks in advance, Simon.

Give it a try with another sd card or format your card and try again, format through the phone itself.
And make sure you put the file on the root of the sd card and not inside any folder.

SUCCESS! Backed up everything from my phone to my laptop, formatted the card and voila!

Cheers my friend!

Just for the future, make sure you don't disconnect the sd card from the phone/pc without unmounting/ejecting from the software before pulling the card/usb cable out. Its to make sure the card don't get corrupted again.

Whatever things you try, read the reviews and bugs first, and ALWAYS have a CWM backup ready incase things don't go as planned.

Good Luck
:) :)

Cheers ayush. Showing my ignorance here...what does CWM stand for? So far I have added timeriffic app and set a night schedule, and also added link2sd which is a quality little app. I have removed all the crap that came with the phone that I'll never use...stuff like thinkfreeoffice etc, and I have replaced google with opera mini. So far so good!

CWM= ClockworkMod recovery, it is a custom recovery for android phones.
Its a must for rooted users, without it you can't flash custom roms, patches, fixes or any modifications.
Search for a CWM 5.0.2.6 and flash it through stock recovery.

Read the rooting guides and tutorials given in the sticky threads in this forum and at xda.
Main tools for a rooted user=>
CWM=Custom recovery
Odin 4.38= Flashing stock firmwares, downgrading/upgrading baseband, converting file system from rfs(stock firmware) to ext(Cynogenmod roms)
Titanium Backup=Complete backing up of user and sytem apps and data
Root Explorer(or any file manager that supports root access)
MyBackup Root= Backup sms, mms, contacts, calender, bookmarks etc Superuser(you might already have that)

These are just the main necessities, rest are upto your requirements.

Link2sd is a pretty usefull app

Make sure you know what you are deleting from the system, somethings although useless are required for proper functioning of other apps, you don't wanna mess with them.:D:D

My Advise=Read the rooting guides and tutorials very thoroughly. Read as much as you can and prevent posting new threads with headings 'HELP PHONE DEAD!!' in the forums :p:p

Downloaded CWM 5.0.2.6 to my laptop. Added it to my sdcard, treied installing it through recovery mode and got the following error message - E: Error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip (status 7) Installation aborted. Now what do I do? Complete noob at all this...help before I do something stupid and brick my phone!

Also, I cannot find a link to download ODIN 4.38 from anywhere!

EDIT! Found a link, now have odin 4.38 on my laptop, and Titanium backup on my phone too...which is a godsend, along with root browser lite.

That error usually comes in unrooted devices mate.
Are you sure you got rooted successfully?

Now that you have Odin, download your current firmware from sammobile.com(according to your region and csc) so that in case of screw ups, you'll have the sure shot backup. Also incase you have to go to service center, you will need to return to stock.

Anyways try this one, this is what i used.

According to root validator my device is successfully rooted, and none of the PDA or CSC numbers on the sammobile site match the ones on my phone. I updated the firmware a few days ago when I downloaded kies...will that do? Odin just keeps telling me to connect my phone without actually giving me any hint of how to do that, and I can't find a decent tutorial anywhere!

Tried installing the update you posted. I got the following message -

--Install /sdcard ...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
Installation aborted.

I suppose it's a step up from the last error message! There seriously needs to be a step by step guide written in baby language, with no abbreviations, and explanations of the various terms (Flash, Firmware etc etc) written for idiots like myself who don't necessarily understand all the gobbledegook, with up to date links for all the downloads you need. There is a lot of info on here...but I have no chance of comprehending any of it because I don't get the abbreviations, don't understand the terminology and I have a stupidly busy life which means I can't afford to spend hours trawling through forums and then searching for the meaning of the terminologies on google!

I think I'm pretty much gonna give up with the whole thing until such a guide exists tbh. Thanks for all your help Ayush, but until I get detailed instructions from step 1, including tutorials on how to use the relevant software, I'm pretty much done with it.

Allright, lets try the procedure i followed, when i rooted we didnt have CWM 5.0.2.6, we had 4.0.0.9. Flash cwm4 first and from it flash cwm5.

Here's a tutorial for CWM4, Use Method 1,
How to install Clockworkmod Recovery (CWM) on Samsung Galaxy Ace (Gingerbread) | Ace Tips

For CWM5,

Upgrading through Kies is fine but if you are on a custom rom or if things go bad, you need Odin to get you back on the samsung stock firmware.

For flashing firmwares through Odin
How to Upgrade Samsung Galaxy Ace via ODIN | Ace Tips

Take a look around this site, its not very updated, but you will get all the basic knowledge and tutorials here.

P.S samfirmware is now sammobile.com

Downloaded the zip file from here - [RECOVERY] [OFFICIAL] ClockWorkMod 4.0.0.9 - Flash via recovery - xda-developers

Did the recovery, did update from sdcard, SUCCESS message! Rebooted phone and...it's stuck on the Samsung Galaxy Ace GT-S5830i screen.

****ing awesome!

Tried rebooting in recovery mode - got the following error message -

E:failed to mount /system (Invalid argument)

Guess I have to wipe data/factory reset AGAIN then. FFS.

EDIT - and that didn't work either.

Anyone wanna buy a facked Galaxy Ace?

I can't do anything with the phone as it's still stuck on the logo screen. Has been for 3 hours now. How can I get the ccbsf thingy onto the sdcard if I can't access the sdcard? My laptop won't recognise that the phones plugged into it.

I am on o2.

I can reboot the phone in recovery mode (hold down the vol up button, power button and home key button) and that's it. When I try and perform the "wipe cache partition" function I get this message -

E:format_volume: rfs format failed on /dev/stL10
Cache wipe complete.

When I try "wipe data/factory reset" I get this message -

Formatting /data...
E:format_volume: rfs format failed on /dev/stL11

Formatting /cache...
E:format_volume: rfs format failed on /dev/stL10

When I "reboot system now" it sticks on the Samsung logo and doesn't do a thing.

For the time being I have dragged out my old Nokia 5800 xpress music. I get a better signal in my house on it, and it connects to the internet much faster using a standard phone signal (no 3G in my area) than the Ace ever did. I'd quite forgotten how easy it is to use! Not having the worry of clearing the memory every half hour so the phone doesn't slow down is most refreshing...and I'm now thinking of sending the S3 back when it gets here and buying a Nokia 700 instead. Yeah it's symbian...but android ain't all that imo, and as long as I can send texts and make calls and occasionally check facebook then I'll be happy as Larry.

Can't start the phone in download mode...tried so many times. Can start phone in recovery mode.

Can't get ODIN to work keep getting "please connect phones" message, laptop won't recognise my phone so can't do anything with KIES.

Have downloaded cooperv1.0ops package and the latest firmware from sammobile but can't do a thing with them.

Guess it's a trip to the o2 shop to see if they can do anything with it.

Anyone want to offer any solutions for the error codes I posted earlier, or will I check in on the forum tomorrow evening and see nothing?

Just want the phone fixed so I can sell it now.

Found an alternative way to get into the download menu.

Remove battery. Re-insert battery. While battery icon is on the screen press POWER and both VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons. When screen goes black REMOVE FINGER FROM POWER BUTTON BUT KEEP PRESSING BOTH VOLUME UP AND VOLUME DOWN buttons until the download screen appears.

...and I unbricked it using ODIN v1.85. :D

Thanks for the suggestion of using ODIN v4.38, but it didn't work at all, neither did CWM.

It's now all back to stock and will stay that way until it's sold. I have a mint condition Nokia 5800 xPress music on the way, and I am officially done with Android.

Ciao!

Hi themoog,

I have exactly the same issue as you and I see you've solved it. Whatever I do with samsung galaxy s via Odin (1.85, 1.87, 4.x ..) it stucks at the same position:

Error mounting sd_card. (file exists ) or sometimes (file doesn't exist)

With which tool have you formatted the internal sd memory in your android?

Regards

Stan
