Help Can't send international SMS from conversation-thread

bdndk

Newbie
I'm having a strange problem with my HTC Desire.
I have an SMS conversation on my phone with a person from another country. When I try to text from within the conversation, the phone is never able to send the message.
Instead I have to start a new message, choose the recipient and then I am able to send without problems. The new message is then added to the old conversation-thread.

I'm have the country code +45, and the recipient has +46.

Does anybody have any idea why this is happening and if there's anything I can do about it? It's very annoying to have to reply to messages this way.

Oh, and I'm using the standard HTC Messages app, which I really like. So telling me to use Handcent instead won't really help me :)

I'm afraid I don't have a solution for you but just to let you know the stock sms can handle "reply" in the thread as I've done it numerous times from +44 to both +1 and +31.

When you long press on the message in the thread and press 'view details', is the senders number displayed in the correct format? I'm not entirely sure if it displays that info from your phonebook or from how the sender has their details set up. If the latter, it could be as simple as having the sender amend their details to an international format. I could be wrong, though. It's happened before. :-P

Hi bunnisher, thanks for your reply.

I just checked the messages again, and it's pretty weird. The messages from the other number are listed as from +46 7XX (the number starts with 7). When I start a new message and send it, the number is the same. But if I reply from within the thread, the number it's sending to is 07XX. So no country code, but a zero instead.

Any ideas?

I had a similar problem, and then found that I had the number for the contact set without the international dialling code as the primary number. Once I changed it to include it, problem was solved.

(The 07xxx number is the local number - we drop the leading 0 when adding the country code.)

Agree with archphoto - you probably have the contacts number set without the international dialing code somewhere.

I had a similar problem and I had saved one of the numbers wrong and it set as primary number but I had the proper number in the contract as well. The messages was using the primary mobile number though

Another suggestion some countries don't reply back from the person's number. A lot of American networks (which are rubbish at accepting international mms and sms in a lot of instances) when your friend replies to you there will reply back from a weird number. I was getting replies to me with a Guernsey phone number and the persons mobile number was the first line of the text and then their text message, just crazy! it was from a different guernsey mobile number every time so you couldn't save it!

That's the weird part, cause the number in my contacts is the right one. With +46 country code and all. If it was wrong, I shouldn't be able to create a new message, find the recipient from my contacts and then send...

Same problem here.
I can't reply to international sms but can create a new message.
Stock app and ChompSMS both behave the same.
I've deleted the contact and re-input many times in different formats but fails every time.
When I view the failed sent message details the international part of the number is completely missing.

eg the contact is 0035796******

but the failed sent message just says 96******

very frustrating!

I have the same problem with my Wildfire.
Trying to text my friend in Australia, thanks for the tip on getting around it! :D

I have same problem but with the new Samsung Galaxy S3

Local SMS text sends are fine. Problem only affects me on International SMS.

When I select the SMS recipient from the Contact list (Mobile number default set too) it always fails.

If I manually enter the same number it works ok.

I can only think there's a bug in the SMS / Contacts number picking code.

I've called support twice, both times they say they have checked it and it works - well I'm telling you it doesnt !

I have given up International SMS on my Samsung S3 now and use my old iPhone (that works ok)

A real nuisance !

I'm having the exact same problem on my sony xperia acro s.
I can't reply to international text message from within the dialogue.
But I can send new message from contacts.
I checked all message (delivered and failed) and the numbers are the same.

My girlfriend lives across the border so this problem is really annoying.

Has anyone found a solution so far?

Yeah same problem on my htc wildfire. So anyone found a proper solution ?
I've totally deleted the contact and re entered it, tried with the + and with 0011 in the number. It's fine when sending a new message, and when receiving one it displays the +, but when replying to an sms it removes the + so the txt fails. Very very annoying.
