Help Can't send MMS when WiFi is on

Hi Folks,

I've been having trouble with MMS on my Nexus 5 since updating to MM, and have been fussing with it for a couple weeks now trying to figure out what is up. Some time after upgrading to MM I noticed that I wasn't receiving text messages with pictures. I was also unable to send. When I tried to send one it would just sit there saying "Sending" and eventually would fail, and I could tap to try and send it again (which almost never worked). I also wasn't receiving them - my brother would send me a text referring to a pic he had sent me, but I never would receive the pic.

I Googled around a bit, and found some posts that indicated Pushbullet had broken MMS on Marshmallow and they suggested removing it and rebooting the phone. I did that about 10 days ago, but it was still hit or miss with MMS - mostly miss. I tried switching between Hangouts and Messenger - still no joy. I finally tried sending one while I was out away from home and it went through. Over the last week, through a process of elimination I have determined that if I have WiFi on (even if not connected to a hotspot) the MMS will not send or receive. Turning WiFi off and sending a text with a pic goes right through. If I have one I tried to send that's stuck because WiFi was on, I can shut off WiFi and then try to resend (after it's failed), and it goes right though. I reproduced this activity about 10 times today. WiFi on, no MMS. WiFi off, MMS works fine.

I have Googled this and found others with similar experiences, but wasn't able to find a solution. Usually the threads digress into an argument about whether MMS can use WiFi or not. Let me be clear - that's not my issue or question. I don't care how the MMS actually goes, but when WiFi is on it should still go. Period. I did not have this problem prior to the Marshmallow update. Since I pretty much leave WiFi on ALL the time, this is becoming a huge PITA.

If anyone has any pointers about how to get an MMS to actually send while WiFi is on, please let me know.

Thanks,

Gary

Forgot to mention. I've checked my APN settings and they match what Cricket says they should be. I would think if they were wrong it wouldn't work at all though. The fact that it works when WiFi is off leads me to believe this isn't a problem with my APN settings.

When I send out a MMS, I manually turn OFF the WiFi, because as long as it is ON, DATA will not be used.

Some text apps are smart enough to do that for you manually.

turn off WiFi, send the MMS and then turn on WiFi again.

Back with 4.4.4 and earlier, Textra would turn off WiFi and turn on DATA...
now that functionality has been crippled because of Google's stupidity in not allowing app developers access to the api that can do that. Why should we be forced to go back to the Dark Ages and do things manually again?

I always leave DATA turned OFF... it is never ON unless I leave home, and then only if I need internet access.
but, I have to remember to do it manually.... it is a nuisance, big time.

What irks me about this is that if WiFi is on but I have no WiFi connection (say I'm out somewhere where there is no hotspot), I'm getting my data from the mobile connection, but still won't send the MMS. Shut off WiFi and it goes, turn it on (again, with no active WiFi connection - the WiFi is just on but not connected) and MMS won't go. This started with Marshmallow. I was able to send MMS via Hangouts before Marshmallow and never had to fuss with shutting off WiFi to get it to send even when there was a WiFi connection.

Assuming you are on the stock ROM, this really seems like something to do with the APN settings. I know you said you already checked, so I don't know what else it could be - but this is not normal behavior.
To send/receive MMS, you need to have your mobile data connection enabled. Whether WiFi is on, or off shouldn't/doesn't make a difference.
