Can't silent notificaion

I tried putting my notifications on SILENT but I still get a tone. Specifically the "join hangout" tone. If I change the tone to say..."flower" I still hear the join hangout tone and THEN the flower tone. This is really annoying me. I can't figure out how to stop the tone from sounding....

that doesnt sound right, you might need to do a factory reset
