Help Can't update via Kies

Kies is totally broken. I tried to update my phone to ICS via Kies after it said an update was available, but to no avail.

I clicked update and it downloaded the required files. The it said something about preparing for update. Then it started trying to download more files, but after 3 hours it had reached 2%.

I cancelled and tried again, exactly the same except it got stuck at 1%.

Then I couldn't connect my phone at all so I reinstalled Kies from the Samsung website.

Now it still won't recognise my phone at all.

Kies is total junk.

Okay, I can now get back to the screen where it says "downloading file for firmware upgrade of GT-I9000. Please do not disconnect the cable connected to the PC.

The problem is, this gets to about 5% and then just tops, for all eternity.

Wow.. this time I got to 27% before the "operation timed out"
