Help Can't upgrade to 4.1.2

New Nexus 7 - not rooted and I don't really have much tech knowledge. I keep getting pestered by my Nexus to update to 4.1.2 but every time I try - it goes in the process where the little green droid guy has some sort of blue energy ball spinning around and then he falls on his back with a big red triangle over it - then it reboots and I'm back to 4.1.1. I even tried doing a factory reset and set up the Nexus w/o my gmail information so as not to download any apps that may have been a conflict and then tried the update - same result. So, now what are my options?

I know that some say to stay with 4.1.1 but I want to be up to date as again - I'm not a techy so just want the darn thing to update. Is this a warranty issue? Unfortunately I purchased this at Walmart and don't think they'll take it back just because it won't update. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance for any guidance you can give.

If you want to be up-to-date, you might want to go to 4.2.1. But I think you first need to root.

To get to 4.2.1 you need to update to 4.1.2 from 4.1.1. then it will prompt you to update to 4.2 from 4.1.2. after your reboot from that it will then prompt you to update to 4.2.1.

Have you tried a factory data reset?

Just were clear, I know you say you aren't rooted... but you haven't unlocked the bootloader or anything like that have you?

An unlocked bootloader wouldn't matter. At least it didn't for me. I went back to stock with stock recovery and unlocked and was able to get the ota (all of them)

You're right, but unlocking the bootloader is the first step to putting on a custom recovery. That's eventually where I was heading with that ;)

Basically I was just making sure even though he isn't rooted, he also doesn't have a custom recovery. Because you can have one without being rooted.

O OK I got ya and the ota will fail if you don't have stock recovery... I see now

Since I have no idea what you're talking about I'm guessing I didn't. The only thing I did was un–check the security for being able to add non–Google play apps as I wanted to add flash so I could watch amazon prime content. But I had already had a few failed attempts at trying to add 4.1.2 prior to that.

Also, I did try factory reset without luck. What now? I do see elsewhere on the Web others with the same problem. I don't really want to install it myself for fear of screwing something up.

The other option would be to manually install the update without root. I can get you directions if you'd like.

I like the rooting route ;)

OK - so once I root - then are you telling me the update should install just fine? I'm about a 3 on a scale of 1-10 when it comes to stuff like this. I can do it - just need some guidance. :D

Thanks

Well, no it will still fail, but the great thing about root is that you have complete control over your device. You may install any version of android you desire.

You could simply flash the stock 4.1.2 ROM and you are all updated.

And how would I go about doing that?

There have been several reports hereabouts of N7s failing to install updates. The 32GN WiFi version seems most afflicted. My recollection is that when this happened the tablets were exchanged under the warranty. It would be worth a search of the forum to check.
