Can't upload audio via USB

When I connect my Honor 5x via USB and look in Windows explorer, I only find a 'Documents' folder on the phone. No sub folders, no music folder, and I don't see the SD card at all. The manual gives no instructions other than to say transfer music via USB. Tried to dump files into the Docs folder, but it has almost no room, and I've put nothing in it. The SD card has several gb free, but I can't access it. Also looked at the music app on the phone and see no way to import from there. Is something missing, or am I going about this wrong? Thanks

Did you pull down the notification and choose files in the usb connected
 
I assume you meant WITH the usb connected. Yes, I pulled down notifications in the 5x, and there is nothing about files or anything to do with accessing files on my computer and exporting them to the music app on the 5x. In fact, there is no notification that I even connected the 5x to another device, but I know I am connected b/c I can view all my 5x content on my PC via the HiSuite app...except Music, which isn't listed as a category at all (I assume that for some reason HiSuite doesn't deal with music? Seems strange. All my pics, videos, contacts are accessible).

Uninstall hiSuite and leave the drivers
 
Yes, I did, and earlier had changed the setting under Developer Settings so I can connect using HDB, not just use USB for charging. Selecting Files in notifications makes no difference in the options available in HiSuite (contacts, messages, videos, pictures, apps, Outlook)
