Help Can't use keypad during call to select an option!

Whenever I phone a business that requires me to press a number to select an option I am screwed! Example: "Please press 1 to speak to a member of staff". I have to wait to see if the number will automatically put me through to someone when I fail to select an option. Seriously, even the first mobile phones that came out could manage this simple process. Have I got a setting wrong or is a Nokia 5110 (1998) better at managing this process than a Pixel 4a (2020)? Please note, I can see the keypad, however when I press a number it is not recognised by the automated line. Thank you for any advice :)

Something is set up wrong, unless somehow the Pixel 4a lacks a feature that my Pixel 2, HTC One or even my 2010 HTC Desire had. And it works on all of these even though I have my phone set not to play annoying beeps while I am dialing.

Unfortunately I can't see any setting in the Google dialer that controls DTMF tones (or at least not separate from the aforementioned annoying beeps). That a Google app has fewer settings than others I've used doesn't surprise me, unfortunately, but it makes it hard to suggest a fix. Perhaps you could try doing the opposite of what I've read Google suggest when doing searches for this and installing a third party dialer app and see whether it works for this?
