I have a captivate and I was flashing roms and then. All of sudden I got to the boot screen now and it only shows the android software guy. It doesn't let me go to download mode.

I thought I bricked my phone at least 10 times and each time I was able to recover it. As long as it shows a sign of life, it's a good sign that it can be recovered. The reason I almost bricked several times was a bad USB cable.
The trick that always worked was the one where you pull out the battery, hold both volume up and down, and plug in the USB cable. Google recovery mode and download mode.
