Root Captivate camera not working / CM9

Lurker
On eBay, I picked up this Captivate which was running one of the RC's for CM7. The seller indicated in the description that the camera app crashed whenever you attempted to start it. I took the chance figuring it was just a software issue.

So, I got the phone, flashed it back to Eclair using Odin 1-click. Then I ran through the "official" upgrades to Froyo and Gingerbread using Kies mini. At each step, I tried the camera app and got no joy. The app would start, I would see some of the various controls like the zoom, the take picture button, etc., but the screen was just black. And after a few seconds the app quit with the OS telling me it was not responding.

I pressed on, re-rooting the phone using speedmod and Odin3, and then I put CM9 on along with Gapps. It is running ICS so very cleanly and quickly...I'm enjoying it, but I need the camera to work. Now when I start it it sits and tries for a while and then comes up and says the camera is not responding, encouraging me to click OK to quit, or wait.

The CM9 I am running is the latest stable version cm-9.0.0-captivatemtd.zip from 8/9 21:56:31 PDT. The Gapps I am running is gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip

Currently the phone info says
Android version 4/0/4
Baseband T959TLJL3
Kernel 3.0.8-g54d09f2

Is there a way to get the camera going again, or do I have a hardware problem?

Welcome to the forums, cllewis1. :)
I'm guessing at this point, if throughout all those stock ROMs the camera didn't work, you're likely looking at a hardware problem. I know some versions of custom ROMs can break the camera (one of the most common issues), but if stock ROMs did it, I'm not sure there's much you can do.
I assume through Odin, you've done as clean an install as possible, wiping all data?

Are you referring to clicking "master clear" in Odin instead of just clicking "start"? I was gun-shy of doing that because I wasn't 100% sure what it would do. I'll give it a shot though if it won't damage anything. Thanks for the reply.

Sorry, I'm not very familiar with Samsungs and Odin, but that sounds like it will wipe your entire device including your SD Card. If there's anything on it you'd like to back up, I would do that first.

Understood. Since the phone is new-to-me I don't have anything important on it yet (ok, I spent some time bringing it up to ICS and all, and I have a number of apps installed, but not big deal to reinstall.) I'll give it a go.

I flashed it on back to Eclair using odin and then through the official Froyo and Gingerbread upgrades. This time, though, once in Eclair I ran the Master Clear.
I then re-rooted the phone using Odin and the designgears auto root. No change to the camera situation.
