Help Captivate uses too much data!

Lurker
I just got my captivate the other day and it seems to be using WAY too much data. I only use it for browsing on the web, emails, and the occasional google navigation or facebook post. My data usage Sunday was over 1G in one day! I used it only with wifi all day, so I don't even know how that's possible. I don't stream videos, music, radio, etc. I checked my usage again this morning and it says I used 500GB just yesterday. I know that sometimes the wifi stops working and goes to 3G on its own, but should that really account for that amount of data? I woke up at 2 a.m. this morning to find that my phone was on the 3G network and was trying to open the navigation system on its own?! Nothing was open when I went to bed. Could I have a virus or something?

Welcome to the forums, cmedine.

I'd first install a data monitoring app, available in Market (such as found here: Data Monitor applications - Android).

Once you see the data usage, you can make some decisions as to how to trim that usage a bit (if possible on your device ;)).

Something deffinately doesn't sound right. I've had my Captivate for about a month now and I haven't used that much data total.

Make sure you don't have any news apps installed. I downloaded and ran TrafficStats Lite app and found out that the ABC News app that I had installed had used 990 MB in 2 weeks, even though I had NOT USED IT EVEN ONCE in that time. Uninstalled ABC News app, and now it's fine. If you like news apps, downloaded and run TrafficStats Lite app to see how much data they use before keeping them, but ABC News app is a definite No-No for limited data plans.

Everything is configurable. If you have facebook, twitter, gmail, and a news service all running push data then yeah you're going to use a lot of data. Anything that gives you the option of how often to check for updates, set it for something like once per hour, then watch your data usage drop. Also use wifi wherever you can.

watch some game apps to had one that was keeping a constant data connection went and trippled my monthly data ussage in a week till i uninstalled it
