First off your car stereo needs to specifically support the bluetooth protocol. If it doesn't then what you ask is not always practical. If it does support bluetooth then you'd need to pair the phone and the car stereo. Once done bluetooth will negotiate common protocols to determine what level of access to provide to the phone. This will dictate whether or not you can "send" music from the phone to the car stereo.
Not only does the head unit need to support bluetooth but it also needs to support A2DP. Not all bluetooth-capable head units do. My 2008 Nissan Rogue does not. BT only supports the headset profile.
Without more details from the OP it's impossible to assist. We don't have a year/make/model for the car if it's a factory system and we don't have the model of the head unit if it's aftermarket.
