Help Car bluetooth

RRWnexus

Lurker
I am new to the Nexus 5 (android for that matter). I am trying to get my Nexus 5 to read texts aloud over my car Bluetooth system. Phone calls are no problem so the bluetooth connection is there but I can't figure out how to receive and send text messages "hands free" as I have been able to on other phones.
I have tried different combinations of SMS apps and other utility apps which are supposed to do this but as yet have zero success. Any and all help is greatly appreciated by this old man.

It will depend on the car's system.
On my car for example, when I get an incoming SMS, the car alerts me, and gives me the option to have it read aloud. I can then respond to it from the car, using predefined responses (It doesn't let me respond with my message - but that is a restriction because of the car's system).

You need to enable "Phone Audio", and "Media Audio" in your phone's Bluetooth settings (after you pair to your car's BT system)

The car audio system is capable and did work just how you described above on a previous (Windows) phone. I do have the phone paired and phone audio and media audio are both enabled. Is there perhaps a setting elsewhere in KitKat that I need to tweak?

I'm not aware of any other setting, other than those two under the bluetooth settings for the car's BT connection. Sorry

You are running 4.4.2, right? BT IMAP wasn't working on my n5 (stock) with Ford Sync Touch until that update. (iPhone worked fine.) Best place to get advice might be through a forum for your vehicle. FWIW, my system works the same way as others have mentioned.

where are phone and media audio settings.I can't see either in the BT settings.Do the devices need to be paired at the time?

In settings, tap bluetooth (not the on/off switch on the right), it will show paired devices. On the right of the device name, there is a settings button. The device doesn't have to be connected, but it has to have been paired previously.

The phone and media audio were checked by default for me

Thx for that.1 of the devices i'm paired to only has the audio option. So how do i set it so it reads my texts to me,both boxes are ticked on the other device.

I suspect that means that the device you are pairing to doesn't support the other profile.
