Accessories Car dock & Home dock differences

I've seen videos of the X in the car dock and in the home dock. I will be using mine as an alarm clock so will be using the home dock on my night stand. The videos show different screens when the X is put in each one. My question is, how does it know it is in the car dock or in the home dock?

I believe with the droid if you put a magnet behind a specific spot on the back of the phone one mode would launch. Flip the magnet around and the other mode launched.
