Carrier IQ keylogging on Wildfire S?

VMDroid

Lurker
I just read about Carrier IQ logging the keystrokes of peoples phones and sending it back to the company and that it's on certain phones. Has anyone found Carrier IQ on the HTC Wildfire S? Also could it vary from carrier to carrier (sprint vs virgin mobile)?

Looks like carrier add the logger, not the mfg. And mainly US carriers. Probably illegal in Europe. HTC says on Twitter that they are exploring an option for customers to opt out on their phones.
Sprint is already known to use the IQ log, so most likely it is on Boost, VM, and the other Sprint carrier phones.

So far I haven't found any reports about Wildfire S having the CIQ, but one guy posted somewhere saying that a Sprint LG Optimus S had the CIQ, but not his VM Optimus V. Also another poster said his Optimus V was clean (all those were rooted, with stock ROM).

There is an app on Android market now, but atm not fully reliable: Voodoo Simple CarrierIQ detector. Ran it on my phone. Nothing found.

I wonder, maybe this phone doesn't have CIQ, but it could have something else doing the same job:
If yo go to settings - manage applications, and look up Android System, it says: This application can access the following on your phone: Your personal information - Read contact data, read sensitive log data, ...
And of course I have no idea if this data is transferred outside my phone or not.

Android system is just Android, it needs to be able to do all that to make your phone function as a phone (and do all of the other cool things your phone can do nowadays) :p.

I just fired log cat up on my moms wildfire and did not find any references to Carrier IQ thank god.

I can't guarantee that it is the same on your phone in case you are on a different provider or got a different variant of the phone for some reason. You can check by installing the android sdk then running the android debug bridge with "adb logcat" then look for anything with "IQ" in it while typing/texting.

I have heard rumor that it shows up in the "all applications menu" of the application management as "htcIQ" or something but my phone (samsung galaxy s2) did have it and it did not show up in here. On my phone it was referred to as "tmobileIQ" or something in the logcat output. Thank god for cyanogenmod.

Best of luck. Lets hope these terrible people get sued for this.

Ran the logcat on the phone. There is no keylogger on The VM variant of the device. HTC Did an OTA Update to remove it a while back
