Root [CDMA] HTC bootloader unlock method fails

CatBandit

Lurker
If anyone can offer constructive advice I'd really appreciate it as I'm unable to get my phone unlocked using the HTC method.

Here's what I did:

I had my phone rooted with the Revolution method.

The most recent OTA update for version 2.08.651.2 downloaded but failed to update so I jumped through the hoops to unroot so I could get the update - this is where things started to go horribly wrong for me. After the unroot I still wasn't able to do the update so I found the RUU file for the 2.08.651.2 update and installed it.

Then I went through HTC's steps to unlock the bootloader but it fails on their step 12. When I run the command "fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin" it hangs after printing "sending 'unlocktoken' (0 KB)..." and never completes.

Obviously I messed up by unrooting my phone and then flashing with the recent RUU as the bootloader changed and I'm now stuck with a phone that won't root. Has anyone else encountered a similar issue?

Thanks!

Are you using Windows 7 ? If so then you need to copy the token an put it in a notepad and get rid of the spaces in front of each line then recopy the token.

Why not just use the New Revolutionary method for the HBOOT 1.50.0000 ?

I can't believe I know that, I saw it in a video when I watched someone do that whole process.

Nice to know Revo has an option for Hboot 1.50 or are they also using the HTC site also to unlock??

Why not just use the New Revolutionary method for the HBOOT 1.50.0000 ? And why did you unroot to take the Update anyway? that just seems dumb

I've read of one documented case at XDA for revolutionary getting s-off on an HBOOT 1.50 Evo 3D - that guy had s-off already, then bit-twiddled it on - nothing about that case was a standard deal, but that one poster keeps insisting it will work for everyone. I have read of zero cases of that being replicated by normal use cases - and plenty of speculation.

It's not real for everyone.

If you're at HBOOT 1.50 on a CDMA (Sprint) 3D, then only the HTC unlock will take you the least bit forward.

When that changes, it will be reflected here:

public:revolutionary [RootWiki]

The OP is in trouble and needs help. Please hold off questioning why or criticizing in any way until the trouble has passed. Put yourself in their shoes with a failing unlock.

Thank you. ;)

Now - please help: what does it mean to copy the token? Does that mean editing the .bin file?

So I've done some more research and digging that I wanted to pass along to anyone else who may be in the same situation as I am.

After reading through the above mentioned thread the main difference is that this guy didn't ever turn S-On during his unroot. I did. So if his claims are accurate and he was indeed able to flash from HBOOT 1.5 to 1.4 it is because of the S-Off flag. I am unable to downgrade as it gives me an error and aborts the entire flash (Using an older version RUU).

I've made some calls. Called HTC Tech support and the lovely lady I spoke to refused all help when I had an unlocking the bootloader question. She said she could lose her job (I don't think she knew anything about it or she just wanted to get me off the phone). I explained that I'm getting stuck on step 12 of their instructions so certainly they should be able to offer some help, but no luck. I even threatened to return the phone at buy a different brand...she didn't like to hear that but it didn't change her message.

I called a few Sprint repair stores in my area and finally got in touch with a tech who seems to be into the rooting and understood the frustration of my situation.

He has offered me the following suggestion:
First, do the forum search and internet research - I explained that I had done then. Then he suggested I try a hard reset of the system through the HBOOT screen. If that works to enable the HTC mechanism awesome, I'm back in the game. If that fails he told me to call Sprint tonight and sign up for their open enrollment TEP plan then come into his store tomorrow and he'll authorize the phone exchange at no charge. - AWESOME!

So I should be back in the game in the next day or two, possibly with a new Evo 3D, leaving HTC to refurb mine simply because they refused to help.

I'll keep ya posted...

what operating system are you? Did you get stuck while giving HTC the token from your phone?

did he even read my post? at least you are getting a new phone

Cat, would you be so kind to list the HTC steps?

Also, z50, I know Cat read your post, but maybe there's some confusion in the details (notice I was unclear as well what you suggested).

That is why I also posted the video, it explains that in there about the spaces

Z50King: yes, I read your post. Getting the token from HTC was not the problem, spaces were not a problem for me. My problem occurred after I got the Unlock_code.bin file and I tried to apply it using the command fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin

This command is supposed to finish quickly and give you the unlock screen on your phone, that never happens for me as it just hangs indefinitely.

Thanks to EarlyMon for a few back and forth PM's earlier today where I bounced a few ideas past him and he was kind enough to locate the link that talked about the guy who claimed to get S-Off on the HBOO 1.5. The summary of the results from that were in my last post as I waned to document the efforts for someone else running through the same unfortunate issues.

The HTC steps are basically identical to the ones in the video Don posted except they have you jump through the hoops of collecting the fastboot and required .dll files into a folder for the app to run on your PC. The steps in the video are more convenient as you don't need to spend time collecting the superuser and additional files mentioned.

BTW, I'm running XP.

I just completed the hard reset and that didn't work. EarlyMon figured it wouldn't but I figured that it wouldn't hurt to give it a shot anyway.

HTC's steps, as found on HTCDev.com

Start by logging onto their website and initiate the bootloader process. NOTE: You'll need to setup a free account with them.

Acknowledge and confirm the "Are you sure" warning and accept their legal terms where they tell you that your warranty is pretty much gone if you do this.

Step 1:
Remove the battery and reinsert

Step 2:
Press Volume Down and Power to launch into the bootloader

Step 3:
Select Fastboot from the menu

Step 4:
Connect your phone to your computer via the USB device

Step 5:
Collect the required files into a folder for convenience:
adb.exe
adbwin.dll
fastboot.exe

Step 6 & 7:
Get a command prompt and change to the directory where you collected your files

Step 8:
In the command window, type: fastboot oem get_identifier_token

Step 9:
Copy the identifier token - NOTE: This is where folks seem to get the extra space if they aren't careful with their copy.

Step 10:
Paste the token into their webpage and click Submit

Step 11:
Get the email and save the attachment into the folder you're working in with the fastboot and .dll's you collected above.

Step 12:
Type fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin

Step 13:
Accept the agreement and select the option to continue with the unlock.

That's it, however I'm getting hung up at step 12....close, so close. :)

Not sure if this would be helpful to anyone, but I ran the CRC check, here are the values that are currently being reported on my phone:

Well the bright side is your getting a new phone, and now you know the process, good luck on your new phone and keep us posted on your progress

I just got a replacement phone for having a dead spot on my touchscreen. Trying to go through the exact same process I did on my first Evo3d, which worked just fine, unlock, recovery, root, and flash.

They said they replaced it with a brand new phone, but I'm thinking they didn't send a standard retail version because I haven't come across any forums with people having the exact same issue.

I don't get any errors either, in fact it says "unlock token check successfully" but just never pulls up the unlock screen.

Any ideas?

I have had this same problem, quite frustrating, cant seem to get to the unlock screen even though everything shows that it is working normally.

I would love to get some advice on a possible solution, thanks.

thank you

i did not unlock this way, so i really can offer no help. maybe someone who had this issue that got it working can chime in. Also, have you retried more than once?

also, are you sure that you are cd to the correct directory with fastboot?
