Root [CDMA] I unlocked via HTC, why no root?

Okay, I followed the instructions on the HTC site and went throught the process to unlock my bootloader. I thought it did the trick. It reset my EVO 3D to factory reset. Then, I tried to install WiFi Tether and it said my phone wasn't rooted. What am I doing wrong? Am I missing a step here?
 
You missed a few, actually :P

First, read and follow the instructions here:

Start at the point where it says:

So, you got ur Bootloader unlocked via HTC, now, on your phone, go to menu > settings > applications > development and check the box net to usb debugging.

That'll show you how to root your phone as-is. If you want to install a custom ROM, you have to pick one and install it the way that post 2 indicates. Here's the list of available ROMs:
