I know it would probably be just fine but wanted to check first. I got a popup stating that there is an update to VM. This would not mess up my phone reference being rooted would it????

DonB is right. It is just an update to the Sprint Visual Voicemail app.

If it were an update to Android itself, I would avoid it if you are rooted. That is the general rule of the thumb with firmware updates.
