cell phone roaming

[ciguy]

I made a call to canada last month from my house in fla. My cell company charged me 14.00 for the couple minute call and said it was roaming.

Is there a company out there that do not charge roaming for making calls outside of the country as long as you are within your calling area?

I thought roaming was once your are calling from outside your callin.

I think you can try VOIP calling apps like NetTalk.

If you get tower trouble in your area, you can go on roaming and not realize it (example, if you have Sprint, you can end up using Verizon towers) - then when you call long distance or international, your rates may skyrocket, as you've found.

Many phones have a way to warn you if you've hit roaming, try looking under your main Wireless settings.

I think you might want to consider that regardless of your carrier - $14! Ouch!

How many of U are using these VOIP calling apps. What are your views on the companies that provide the service? Before I jump in would like to know good and bad.
