cell radio chews battery

Android tablet without phone or 3g uses battery. May one turn off cell radio & if so, how

If I understand your question correctly, you want to turn off the radio. While on the radio screen, press the "list" button. On my phone the last item on the list is "end", hit that.

But if the tablet doesn't have phone or 3g, why does it have a cellular radio at all?

Anyway as Funky says, airplane mode, then turn your WiFi back on, and you should be sorted (I'm assuming you want WiFi).
