Change default notification

I have a sound clip that I want to use as my sms alert. I have placed it on the sd card under Audio/Notifications and I can play the sound file OK but when i go to the settings of the sms app (Handcent SMS) and choose Notification Setting and then Select Ringtone, it does not display the soundfile I have stored on the card, just the built-in ones.
How do I make the app use the stored sound file

I am using custom notifications in Handcent SMS without problems. I added the custom sounds to media/audio/notifications on the SD card and they appear in the list of sounds in Handcent. Have you used the correct path on the SD card? Can the phone find the sounds if you go to Settings|Sound & Display and check the notification sounds there? I think that I may have done a reboot to get the sounds recognised by the phone.
