Root Changing Boot Animation

Hey guys, just a quick question. Any recoveries available out there that will allow me to flash a boot animation with S-ON? Wondering about 4ext in particular.

Not sure if I want to go so far as the "wire trick" just to change that boot animation, though it is really terrible. I'm content with the stock ROM for the time being, so I won't be trying to flash any kernals and whatnot anytime soon so gaining S-OFF is not too high on my priorities list.

Thanks.

I would like to know this also. I pulled the bootanimation from one of the ROM's on here & tried to flash it using 4EXT but it just aborted. I don't know if I did something wrong but it didn't work. Does anyone have any flashable boot animations?

If your main goal is to get rid of the stock boot animation (a worthy goal), you can just delete it from system/customize/resource, there's an mp3 and a zip that both have boot animation in the name, if I recall. There's a thread about it in this forum too. You'll end up with a silent, plain "ANDROID" boot animation. Don't need to be s-off, do need to be rooted.

IMO you should reconsider...the ROMs with LeeDroid tweaks have a ton more features and customization that I personally can't live without. You also don't need S-OFF to flash ROMs, and kernels can be flashed using Flash Image GUI. If you don't like the kernel, you can fastboot flash boot boot.img from fastboot to flash the stock boot.img that comes with the ROM, which overwrites the custom kernel. As far as boot animations go, it's usually a case of modifying the files with something like ES File explorer in the /system folder. That's the way it was with other VM phones, looks like this one is no exception, like swerver32 indicated

Think I'll go ahead and take this route. Prefer nothing to the crap that's there now. Can VM's boot animations get any worse? I guess time will tell. 'Preciate the tip.

I hear ya. Usually run stock for the first couple of months to give the custom ROMs time to grow and get any bugs worked out.

As for the boot animation, I tried ES File Explorer to replace the stock animation, but kept getting a "can't be done" type of error. Verified that root explorer was enabled as well as mounting the system as writable, but still no dice. Figured I was either doing something wrong (which I doubt but is possible) or I couldn't do it because I'm S-ON.

Think I read somewhere that the boot animations are linked to the kernal somehow, not really sure, but if push comes to shove, I'll just go S-OFF if the animation really starts getting to me.

So here you go everybody. You have to have root but S-on is OK. Use Root Explorer or whatever file manager you prefer and go to /system/customize/resource and look for a file named SPC_bootanimation.zip
Take that file and rename it something like SPC_bootanimation.zip.bak or whatever you want and move it to a different folder on your SD card. You will need a file manager that lets you access the root directory and change from "read only" to "read/write".
Now, take whatever bootanimation you can get your hot little hands on and move it to /system/customize/resource then rename it SPC_bootanimation.zip and change the permissions to rw-r--r--. Reboot and you should see your new animation.

You could also remove the file named BoltAnimation.mp3 and move it to your SD card. It is the annoying sound file that goes along with the stock VM bootanimation. I usually like to save these stock files somewhere on my SD card so I can reload them later in case I need to return the phone to stock for any reason.

DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU DAMAGE YOUR PHONE IN ANY WAY BY TRYING THIS! It worked for me so it should work for you.

For the record, I finally got this to work for me. Turns out it was a problem with ES File Explorer. Uninstalled and reinstalled and everything went smooth as butter. Don't know why I didn't think to reinstall before. :o

I like X-plorer and it worked with the above instructions.

Now to find a boot animation chooser app or something...

i use boot animation factory to make/rip boot animations from other devices. Found the program on xda after someone mentioned it elsewhere on the boards. Works great. I don't bother flashing through the program though, I do it the file explorer way.

If you do decide to S-Off I used JuopunutBear (wire trick) I have heard of people having problems doing the wire trick part of it because of the wire they were using. I found it best to use coax cable the wire inside is the perfect for this. I was able to get S-Off on the first try. here is the post i used to do this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1889438 Hope this helps.
