Help Changing from Silent to Vibrate

What I find fairly annoying with this phone is when my phone is on silent, if I accidentally touch the volume button on the left hand side of the phone, it changes it from silent to vibrate.

Does anyone know how to disable or change this button function?

This kinda makes sense and I did not know this.

Just today I receieved two calls, having facing the phone face first on my table, causing the ring tone to silence. When I checked my phone later it was automatically turned to "silent". This is weird, but actually kind of neat.
