I forgot to mention that I tried to simply remoce the Google account from my phone and reinstall it, but I received a message that I would have to restore the phone back to the factory settings to accomplish this, which I of course don't want to do.

first, you can't remove your default gmail account. You have to factory reset your phone to do this and its not worth it.
second, when you change your gmail password, the next time gmail tries to sync (on your phone), it should prompt you to enter your password. So you dont need to do anything special to get the new password on your phone. Just wait for the phone to prompt you.
