Changing Navigation map perspective?

I hate, hate, hate the perspective view in the navigation app.

Is there any way to change it to a flat looking-down-at-a-map view?

I swear I've seen it a couple of times in Navigation mode, but I don't know how I got it or how to keep it.

Tap the compass needle in the upper left corner of the map.
