I'm currently looking at changing carriers. does anyone have any advise as to who may provide better service between sprint or verizon? I'm specifically looking at the droid 2 with verizon and the evo 4 or the evo shift with sprint. I'm able to get the same pricing plan with both carriers with my company discount so it's a matter of which would provide better service in the long run. I have heard good and bad on both carriers so am stuck on which one and have not heard much on the phones I mentioned. any advise to hopefully make the decision easier would be appreciated. Thanks!

Personally I prefer Sprint but that's mainly because of their much better coverage in my area than Verizon. I would go to their websites and check coverage in your area and base your decision from that and a little more research.

You'd have to ask people in your area. Generalized discussions regarding coverage are fairly pointless unless you really want to read carrier fanboy rants. Every carrier has holes in coverage -- even Verizon. Always select the carrier first based on real world coverage (don't rely on the maps) where you need it.
Define what you mean by service. If you're referring to the CSR's, they vary even with a given carrier. You already seem to be aware of the devices available from each.

With a limitations. Data when roaming on Verizon is limited to 250MB per billing cycle, and 2G speeds. This really shouldn't be an issue though unless your home or most heavily visited areas are roaming areas.

I got some clarification. But first, it's not GSM roaming, as neither Sprint or Verizon offers GSM, so it would be impossible for a Sprint phone (even a world phone with GSM capability) to roam on Verizon in this manner.
Anyway, here's the roaming limits for Sprint on Verizon
Minutes - Half your minutes or 800 minutes, whichever comes first
Texts - no limits
Data - 300MB (25 cents per MB thereafter), 1xRTT speeds only

I don't know (speculation, not certain here) if Sprint has roaming agreements with national GSM carriers. I think their GSM capable phones are for world roaming only. That seems to be the case with Verizon. As far as I know, domestic roaming for Sprint only occurs on Verizon.
Also, Sprint's data coverage map does show some 3G roaming areas (with limited services, some apps will not work). So there may be some areas where they have a 3G roaming agreement with Verizon, with the noted exceptions.

I have been speaking to a number of friends and actually found that a friend has the the droid 2 through verizon and another friend with the evo 4 through sprint. just based on personal preference of phones I have made a decision and have found many friends in the area that are very happy with the service provided. thank you all again.
