Changing the Dock Row

I found out how you can change the 4 icons in the dock row at the bottom, but is there anyway to have more than 4 that will show up on every screen? Or is it best just to make one home screen with folders and shortcuts and go from there? I am still trying to figure out the best way to customize this since this is my first Android but so far I love it!
 
If you install a launcher, you can have a row of scroll-able icons without ever changing your screen. Check out Go Launcher (one of many, but it's free). You can also create your own icons to use, etc.

If you install a launcher, make sure you don't have any widgets on your stock screens that are pulling data (weather updates for example). Even though you don't see them any more, they're still in the background running.

You can do things like this, and the row of icons at the bottom will scroll:
