Help Charging Port...Micro USB??

So are we safe to assume that our charging cords (not the touchstone obviously) for the pre will work Ok with the EVO?

The USB cord that came with the Pre should work fine but I wouldnt use the palm charger itself.
 
Micro Usb (NOT MINI LIKE THE HERO)is going to be the new industry standard for the majority of phone manufacturers.... save for apple of course..

ok you mean the actual wall thing where the cable plugs in that has the palm logo and usb on one side and the AC plugs on the other side?

Correct, I wouldn't use that to charge the EVO. I know the pre one outputs at 1A and don't know what the EVO accepts, but better to be safe and not risk frying your phone/battery. The usb cable itself, should be fine.

I was concerned with the dock. They say it has an hdmi output for HDTV viewing as well as charging. I really hope it has the usb cable as well.
 
all usb based chargers are the same... there usb they all supply the same amps reguardless. thats the usb 2.0 standard i have used the charger from my moto q9c touch touch pro and hero all on the hero and even my generic car charger aswell

Most USB chargers use a current of 0.5A, whereas the pre charger uses a current of 1A (look it up online). So they all aren't necessarily all the same. Better to check beforehand than risk your phone and assume.

But the device will just draw as many amps as it needs, voltage is what you have to worry about and since all USB connectors are the same voltage you are fine. You can also use a .5A charger with something like the Pre though it will just charge half as fast.

Ah, good to know, yeah I knew the pre would charge half as fast with a .5A charger. Didn't realize with a 1A charger a device would just draw as many amps as it needed.

Yes, by 2011 the micro USB will be the world wide standard charging port for all makes and brands of cell phones. Most all cell phones made after January 2011 will have a micro USB. The industry did this to minimize costs and eliminate the need for dozens of different chargers and cables.

Ok, great information and thanks for the help, so just to be clear what we are saying is that it is Ok to use the pre-charging cables, wall adapter and even car adapter with the EVO?

Is it necessary to get the cables with Ferrite Core?
 
What's the longevity like on these micro usb ports? My evo is on and off a charger a lot!

Fwiw, i believe you can mix and match usb cables and chargers at will. The whole point of using a standard like that is that they're interchangeable. Ferrite core just reduces noise, which doesnt impact dc charging at all. In theory, it might affect data transfer, but I'd be surprised.

Cables are an insanely high profit-margin item. Tons of vendors are thrilled to sell gold-plated, flat-braided, nitrogen-impregnated, snake-oil saturated whatever, but basically, it just needs to make an electrical circuit.
