Help Charging times?

How long does this device take to charge? I'm hearing different things. My htc inspire takes like 2hrs, 3hrs tops to fully charge from 0%.

I don't have full-swing numbers, but for what it's worth I just charged from 40% to 100% and it took me from 1:20pm to 4:46pm using my computer's USB. It's slower than I thought.

Yea, I know it takes a long time even for my htc inspire with a usb cable to the pc charging but on the wall charger its a bit faster.

If you let you phone run down to zero you are degrading the battery. It DOES take longer to charge when it starts at zero.

The charger that is supplied is designed to charge the device while you sleep.

You do sleep, don't you?

If it's designed to charge while you sleep, that means it's likely at least somewhat a trickle charger. That is more healthy for the battery, but slower. Makes sense of you charge while you sleep, since if it's plugged in while on full charge that also can degrade the battery.

Thats what happened to me at work yesterday, I basically let it go down to zero because I was on it constantly rooting/rom'ing and what not and it took like two hours just to get to 29%. Of course I was using it while it was wall charging so that probably didnt help, but I've done the same with blackberrys and htc androids and it would charge ok from 0% while I was using it. Samsungs charging system stinks, well to be fair, I'm running cm7 on it now so I'll see if that helps in charging. Doubt it.

I don't know why Sammy phones take forever to charge. My Thrill takes about as long as an iPhone.

In the long-run, it's a shrewd design consideration. The battery will last a lot longer with a trickle charge, and if most people charge while they sleep they wouldn't even notice.

What is better? Waiting till you get the low battery message or is there a percentage of the battery that you should charge?

I always let the low battery message tell me when it is time to charge, I might be harming it.

Also, is it better to turn it off while charging?

Don't run it dry (usually), but don't charge it from half either. Generally it's good to charge a battery at around 20% or so, maybe less. Everyone once in a while you can run it dry and then charge it fully. The main key is to make the battery as independent as possible. If it's constantly charging, that weakens the battery (same with laptops or any other battery, even). Never buy a phone that was a display piece at a store for that reason unless you want to buy a new battery as well.

I plugged mine into charge last night when I went to bed. It was at 18%. It woke me up buzzing saying it was fully charged about 3 1/2 hours later. Give or take. I was groggy.

That's just how the batteries and Samsung chargers are. It should average around 3 hours. I tend to get a 30% charge every hour if I don't mess with the phone at all and I have the display turned off. If the Phone is completely off you may notice a slight decrease in needed charging time. Also I've noticed it charges slower via USB to computer. Of course this is just all my personal experience and what I've read from samaungs site. They were designed to charge over a 3-4 hour period according to them. Its no iPhone but it is an android so....duh winning

3 hours is about right. USB will definitely be slower unless you use a self-powered usb hub as it won't supply enough current especially with other USB devices connected.

Some Samsung devices (the 10.1 Galaxy Tab for example) won't even charge on a USB port or with a different charger or cable because Samsung modifies the port. The TAB has a special adapter to "bypass" this problem you can get cheap off eBay.

The charging rate is determined by the firmware kernel in the phone and is usually around 500-600 mah/hr so with a 1600mah battery 3 hrs is about right. Some devs have kicked up the charge rate on some phones a bit but you have to be careful or the battery can be damaged (or explode).
