Charging when away from mains electricity

I've just been away for a weekend camping and had problems in re-charging my Note without access to mains electricity.

I tried plugging it into a solar charger that I bought on eBay - result, the phone charge went down, I think the phone was charging the charger!

I plugged it into the car cigarette lighter socket (this was "soft" camping with the car right next to the tent) but even with the phone switched off it took a couple of hours to go from 10% to 38%.

Driving home after the weekend with the phone plugged into the car cigarette lighter socket it was up to 99% after a 4 hour drive.

Anyone got any suggestions or tips? Preferably other than paying

There are some pretty cheap emergency chargers on Amazon. Look for the ones that take AA batteries. I got 2 of them for $3 each a year back.

They won't take you to 100%, but they will keep you going. And you can get. AA batteries almost anywhere. And if it's winter, the chargers make great hand warmers as the batteries drain.
