Cheap VOIP apps

Grooveip. Its amazing, and works great. Call over data (paid), and wifi (free). no additional fees at all. Just need a google voice account.

I use Google Voice with GrooveIP but its a back up phone.

For international calls, I use ActionVoip with their mobile app (If you decide to use it, do not not top up your account more than minimum amount and no auto-recharge.)

GrooveIP + a Google free Google Voice account lets you make free VOIP from anywhere in the world to the US & Canada. (Obviously that includes all calls within the US & Canada.) It also lets you receive calls from anywhere in the world to your US/Canada-based Google Voice number. If you want to make international calls (like US to China or China to Japan) you can buy international minutes from Google at competitive rates. I've been using it as a backup phone for about a year. Works fine. There can be some lag, depending on your WiFi network, but not much different than any other VOIP solution that I've tried.

There are SIP-based solutions (using SIP apps like SIPDroid or CSIP Simple and PBX accounts) but they're VERY complicated to set up and keep working month after month (at least with the free PBX accounts that I used). I tried them and they are no better in quality than GrooveIP Lite (which is free). GrooveIP communicates directly with Google Talk's servers and is very easy to use and set up.

Talkatone is reportedly good and it consumes less data but everything goes through Talkatone's servers (which may be just fine). I haven't tried it. I have unlimited data on Sprint and I only do VOIP calling when I'm on WiFi so I don't care about the data usage. GrooveIP Lite is free and very easy to use.

Well it seems to me Skype and Global Call are the cheapest except the global call app has a $1.50 credit added for just signing up. Probably cuz its new. You're going to have to install it for yourself to check out the flat rates.

The Globall Call you suggested was the only one that gave free money for signing up. Thanks nanobyte. ( liked your review too).

I liked groove ip more than skype but it had too many dropped calls.

Where do you want to call?

I call to Sweden, China, India and Australia regularly and use actionvoip.com (and their android app)

I have GrooveIP lite and it seems to work for calling most landline numbers BUT it will not connect to a Vonage number. Calling phone dials and appears to ring but never rings on destination Vonage number. Is this normal?
