What update did you apply? What 2.2 ROM did you flash?

If you flashed a 2.2 ROM like Swedish Spring, for example, you should see Android Version 2.2 under Settings>About phone>Android Version.....

Also there you should also see Model number (ZTE-BLADE).....Baseband version....Kernel version.....Build Number

on settings, it says 2.1 update 1

That does not sound correct for 2.2

Thank you dannymur for your reply, but I was following the upgrade from the Orange web site. I tried again today but it only went as far as tiny.com/clocknow and the site was either not working or had moved. I would prefer if it was posible to download it from the computer. The rom etc is all standard I just wanted to upgrade to improve the phone.

There is a 2.2 update available from Orange UK for the San Francisco??

Can you post the link you are following, as I am not aware that Orange have posted any Froyo update for the San Fran?

It would be great if there was, but I don't think so, and of course, it would still be laden down with Orange Bloatware......

Thank you dannymur for going to all this trouble. That is the site I got as far as question 11 completed, but when i went further as in previous thread it would not complete. The phone is origonal software/rom. Mr Pigfish says it is GEN 1. On settings it says 2.1- update 1. I hope this is of some use to you . Many thanks for your time.

Hi dannymur, one final question I have been through the programme and have all the apps on the browser right up to the Recovery Manager. My question is on Settings the Firmware version still shows 2.1-update1. is this right should it not be 2.2?
many thanks.

Sorry, simmo....up to my neck in something else....I will get back to you, promise!!

Perhaps later tonight, OK

First thing to do is download the Phandroid App from Market....on your phone launch Market, sign in with Google Account, search for Phandroid and download the App.

Everything is much easier then, all from Phone!!!

Link, if you need: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.blau.android.phandroidnews

You can sign into the Forum here on your Phone, I would mark this Forum as a Favourite, even on the PC, now, if you are not using the App yet, easier to navigate to this thread.

OK, just wanna check/verify if you are rooted....

Can you please download this from market :

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.joeykrim.rootcheck

Just click above and it will bring you to Android Market....sign in with your Google Account.

It's just a simple app to check for root on your phone, as you should have installed Universal Androot previously, according to the guide you are using.

Just a suggestion before we go any further, I think we will dispense with that guide/tutorial......if that's OK, there are better ways to skin a cat, or to get to what you want. If not OK, we go with the guide!!

There is a better root app, Z4Root, modified for OSF/Blade, which will give you permanent root on your phone.

Download link below, just click and save to SD card.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/32953239/z4root_blade_perm_root_v2.zip

To be continued.....

Downloaded your last link for z4root. Instead of being able to put it on my sim card it says to complete action using either ES Zip Viewer com.estrongs.android.pop or ES Zip Viewer com estrong .android.pop.cupcake. What is best?

Best??

Do you have two versions of ES File Explorer on your phone??

Looks like it, as Cupcake is for earlier Android 1.5/1.6 (Cupcake/Donut).....

BTYW, there is a difference between SIM Card and SD Card........not talking about SIM card here, OK??

Look it up, google is your friend!!!

The zip file is on your SD Storage, probably in /sd/download folder.....you should look there with ES, just to get the feel of using the File Manager.

But as you have ES Manager on your system, it automatically will open a zip viewer on download.

[BTW, If you have two versions of ES, I would un-install the Cupcake version, it will lead to endless trouble for you.]

However, I would tap on the other option:

ES Zip Viewer com.estrongs.android.pop

This will allow you to view the files in the zip file you downloaded, which should have 3 files, 2 will be xxxyyy.java files, the other will be:

z4root_blade_perm_root_v2.apk

So, you should tap the z4root.apk file, and allow it to be installed....OK

Then, run Z4Root when installed, you need to go to the App Drawer and tap on Z4Root.

Tell it to do Permanent Root if asked, and allow to re-boot to finish root job, may take a few minutes!!! let it do its stuff.

You should now have permanently rooted your phone, but, there is an option to un-root, if you need to.

BTW, you should try to familiarise yourself with basic concepts, such as posting links on forums, android basics, file management, stuff like that....

hand-holding will have to stop at some time, but we will get you to 2.2 or 2.3, if that's what you want.....after that, normal support services will be resumed, OK?? Got probs, post the symptoms, help will be given!!!!

To be contd......let me know how you get on!! (Next step will be to flash a ClockworkMod Recovery on your phone, but not as in that guide, OK)

Hi, sorry that you seem to be getting fed up with this, it is more involved than I thought it was going to be after reading other threads on this matter. I have got as far as the Z4root on the browser. As for the ES File Explorer cannot see any difference between them other than one shows the files vertically the other horizontally.Cannot find SD storage and I know the difference between SIM and SD cards. Thank you for your patience.

Simm, please......I am not getting fed up ;)

I want to help you here, if I can, believe me....it ain't so hard...we all started somewhere :)

I think the purpose here is to try to help those who need help, and sometimes ppl here assume a level of knowledge which we forget that noobs, like your good self, may not have.....

(BTW, noobs is not meant to be offensive, I was a noob last March, and was glad to get help here from ppl who had more experience than me :))

my fault, and no probs, we will continue....OK (Don't mind my OK's, I say it all the time, even when I am speaking, just a form of words, OK!!!)

I need to know what you mean by saying things like

I have got as far as the Z4root on the browser.

This makes no sense to me.....have you installed the app Z4Root, which was in the dropbox link I posted? Does it show up in your App Drawer?

I will show you my App Drawer, with ES File Manager and another with Z4Root, if this helps, OK.

ES.jpg

ES File Explorer in App Drawer...

Z4%20App.jpg

z4Root in App Drawer...

(App Drawer ----->press Home Key should get you there!!)

Es File Manager....when you launch this App, it should show SD card contents.....in /sdcard/ folders and files will be shown.

I will show 2 pics:

ES-1.jpg

ES File Explorer....Details view showing /sdcard/

ES-2.jpg

ES File Explorer....Folder view showing /sdcard/

Your downloaded z4Root Zip file should be in a /sdcard/download folder....scroll down and you will find it, if you have not installed it already.

If you tap on that zip file, it will bring up the "Complete action using" pop-up window.

You should tap ES Zip Viewer here.

You will then be presented with the Zip contents, as I already mentioned in a previous post.

You should tap the z4root_blade_perm_root_v2.apk to install z4Root on your phone.......

come back for further stuff, and let me know where you are, OK

Hi dannymur, I am back for further stuff, I have z4root_blade_perm_root_v2.apk installed. So I have done all you have asked. Many thanks.

Hi again simmo, we are on a Bank Holiday week-end here in Ireland, but of course peeing down with rain, so we got some time :)

You have installed z4Root, which will give you permanent root....

Important have you run the app, and allowed it to permanently root your phone, this will involve a re-boot, which you should allow.

Next, we will proceed to installing ClockworkMod Recovery for your phone, which is Gen 1?

Instead of using the Recovery Manager app, which you were unable to download earlier, we will use Rom Manager, from Market, link below:

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.koushikdutta.rommanager&hl=en

It will download and install the RM App.

When you launch, it will look like this:

shot_000007.jpg

Rom Manager GUI (Top)

shot_000008.jpg

Rom Manager GUI (Bottom)

Note, this is my own installation, which is the Premium, but you don't need this (yet ;))...so yours will show Free or something like that!!!

Just take time out to look at this You Tube Video, which gives a pretty good run-down of RM and it's background and uses:

Detailed Walk-Through of ROM Manager for Android - YouTube

Warning Please do not flash/install the latest recovery shown, as it is Gen 2, we will get to flashing an appropriate Gen 1 Recovery next......

[hint....the last option on the RM GUI, shown above in Rom Manager GUI (Bottom)]

BTW, GUI = Graphical User Interface

More later, gotta go out into the deluge :p

Excellent many thanks, it took a long time to download but we are there now.

So you have installed Rom Manager.

Now to flash your Gen 1 Recovery.

Connect to WiFi or Mobile Data.

Launch Rom Manager, scroll down to All ClockworkMod Recoveries, tap this option. You should see this:

shot_000009.jpg

3.0.1.4 should be selected, if not, select it by tapping on it, green radio button should show selected.

When you tap on this recovery, it should start to download, there is a progress bar on top.

Before or after this, I am not entirely sure, but you may be asked to confirm Phone Model, to ensure correct recovery is flashed for the Phone Model (ZTE Blade). (Slightly different for me, as I have CMR already installed)

It should look like this:

shot_000010.jpg

Obviously, if you are asked for this, tap/select ZTE Blade, and your 3.0.1.4 Recovery will be flashed on your phone........

Having now flashed a recovery, to ensure it works, you should try rebooting into Recovery......the BIG TEST!!!!!

You can do this from Rom Manager, by tapping on Reboot into Recovery or by re-booting your phone and doing the following:

Power down phone by pressing and holding top power button, and select Power Off.

Leave for a few seconds, optionally pull and replace Battery (don't think this is necessary)

Now, Press Vol Down & Power buttons together, until Green Android.

Continue to hold Vol Down until you get the ClockworkMod menu!!!!

It should look something like this:

ClockworkMod-Recovery-3_thumb.jpg

ClockworkMod Recovery Main Menu

use the Volumn Control to scroll up/down menus, Back Key to back-out of menus, and Home Key to select option........

The CWR menus and text are quite small, so read carefully.....you can do a lot of harm here, but you will usually be asked for confirmation....don't do it!!!!! yet!!!!

Be careful what you do here, just familiarise yourself with ClockworkMod, read more here:

What Is ClockworkMod Recovery And How To Use It On Android [Complete Guide]

Thanks to Haroon Q. Raja of addictivetips

OK, gotta stop, back tomorrow........

BTW, you may be asked to allow Superuser Access , allow this when asked, tap allow......and tick remember

Hi simmo4238......

Please let me know if you have succeeded with flashing/installing ClockworkMod Recovery, and you are able to boot into recovery?

I need to know so we can continue to a conclusion :)

Hi dannymur,
Yes upto date.

OK Simmo!!

We are that point now, where we are almost** ready to download and flash a 2.2 Custom Rom.

I recommend Swedish Spring Gen 1/2 for you.......it is by far the most satisfactory of the 2.2 Roms available, it has a really good feel on the Blade.

Official Modaco thread: [ROM] [froyo] Swedish Spring RLS5 [2011-04-19] [OLED+TFT] [Gen1][Gen2] - Android @ MoDaCo

Sticking with Gen 1 for the moment, but I have no doubt that you will upgrade to Gen 2 when you are ready, to give yourself the option of going to one of the many 2.3 Gingerbread Rom's now available, including CanogenMod 7.1 and later Nightlies.......

** However, I did say almost, coz we need to do some housekeeping first, to ensure you will be able to:

  • Revert to your current set-up in the event of any problem...Nandroid in Recovery
  • Make a back-up of those Apps you want to restore...Titanium Backup
  • Back-up your Contacts....Synchronise contacts with Google
  • Back-up your SMS to Gmail...

I will also recommend a number of Apps which should also improve your user experience:

  • You already have ROM Manager
  • Titanium Backup....allows you to backup and restore those Apps you have bought or need after flashing new ROM.
  • App2SD for Froyo.....to utilise your SD storage for Apps
  • Launcher Pro.....to give a more smooth and configurable experience on your Blade.
  • My Phone Explorer....a powerful phone management software for your Desktop PC.
  • SMS Backup+....allows you to easily back-up and restore SMS/MMS to your GMail Account
  • Cache Cleaner NG.....allows you to remove all the cache files from the internal memory and (optionally) from the SD card.
  • Go SMS Pro....best (IMHO) replacement Messaging App

There will probably more which will come to mind later, but those are enough to be going on with.

I am putting this in quotes because it goes somewhat beyond the scope of the guide, using an as yet unproven App to achieve what Titanium Backup has been proven to do for quite some time now.

Just an update on Titanium Backup....there is an alternative, but I can't vouch for it. It uses your Nandroid back-up, made in Recovery, to restore Apps, SMS, etc.

AppExtractor....AppExtractor is a tool which will allow you to restore individual applications, data, SMS, and MMS messages from your ROM Manager backups.....just a thought, hope I am not complicating things too much!!!!

Back l8r with full instructions as to next steps...OK

The only reports I've seen of App Extractor are negative so I'd stick with the Tried and Tested Titanium.
